How in the world can they manufacture, package, ship, and sell a reel for $35 in the first place? Either they have free parts and slave labor, or the shoemaker's elves are working overtime.

No R&D, basically take another's reel, disassemble and clone parts using cheap labor and manufacturing.mark poulson wrote:How in the world can they manufacture, package, ship, and sell a reel for $35 in the first place? I saw the same when I was dealing in knives. Pakistani folding knifes selling for $2.00 while others were selling for hundred$. Blade made out of car fenders, Bakelite or plastic handles, and sloppy tolerances. They still cut. Also some cheap knives that were actually pretty good quality selling for dimes on dollar in comparison. Global markets and emerging economies.

I guess, with CNC manufacturing and advanced scanning, it's inevitable.
Let's hope that, on the cheap labor side anyway, globalization means more and more people want higher pay for their work, so we all have a level playing field.
It's happening right now in China.
Fingers crossed.

Even the cheapest reels today are so much better than the reels from 20 years ago.miracleJim wrote:That's what upgrades and supertuning are fortakrat 67 wrote:Big on bling, short on sting! Probably has a bamboo main gear and cardboard drag washers.
Plus, there are probably just a handful of actual reel manufacturers, like there are only half a dozen line extruders, even though there are a ton of brands of fishing line.
I bet the same manufacturer that makes the reels for the major brands also makes the knockoffs.

Noticed some No.8 brochures in the 13 Fishing reps' binder, so I think that I can substantiate the rumour that 13 is at least distributing, if not manufacturing these reels.

If the Zero R has removable knobs and is under 7 ozs and $75 I might buy one.

Do you think the R in Zero R stands for reel?

But this one is not $35, right? If so, I would buy a few just for the parts. Unless those pics are really misleading just the nut, nut plate, screw, knobs, knob caps and handle would make me jump on it if the parts mate with some Daiwa reels. Anything more like the star drag, cast control cap, or anything from the internals would just be a bonus.

230g is respectable. Nice list of features and a reel cover. Sweet. Move over Tatula
