Panfish and trout reel pairing
Just picked up a 6'6" Phenix Elixir. Any reel pairing suggestions? Looking in the $150-250 range. Have considered the Smoke sl10pti and the shimano Stradic 1000 ci4+. Any other suggestions?
Re: Panfish and trout reel pairing
JDM Daiwa Luvias.
Re: Panfish and trout reel pairing
The new ci4+ should be a great improvement over the old reel, which was already a good reel.
Re: Panfish and trout reel pairing
Luvias 1003 is under $250 at digitaka. The shallow spool makes it better than any 1000 size reel they sell here.

Re: Panfish and trout reel pairing
The jdm Luvias is a great reel I have a 2000 sized one. I wasn't truly happy with mine though until I added a hedgehog bearing tune kit. This added an additional 6 bearings and brought the reel up the smoothness and feel I was expecting for a ~$255 JDM spinning reel. That of course added $45 to the price and I was dangerously close to a jdm certate at that price point. Something I've noticed with a lot of daiwa spinning reels is the thicker bail wire arm cosmetically I prefer the thinner ones from shimano.
Also many daiwas seem to require more force to trip the arm by reeling and sometimes don't want to even do it. I never have this problem with shimano (or my certate vintage custom). But it's an issue with my luvias and my 07 certate. Of course a real spinning enthusiast always flips the arm back with his hand but sometimes I'm lazy.
The Luvias 1003 might be a little different in feel than my 2004 though.
I'd hold out for the new stradic ci-4 personally. But if you're gonna go for a JDM spend the extra $80 and get a 2013 Certate 1003 they are insanely cheap for what you get.
edit: it looks like they dropped the prices on one of my other favs.

I paid $330 for mine and have been using it all summer on a 5'8" loomis TSR short of my Stella it's by far my favorite trout reel. At around $275 it's an amazing reel for the price I like it more than my Luvias in look and feel by far. Comes in Shallow Spool and High Gear Shallow Spool. I think i posted quite a few pics of mine around here lol.

I haven't had a chance to try the Certate yet. It's going to be my next reel most likely.MondayMonkey wrote:The jdm Luvias is a great reel I have a 2000 sized one. I want to get a 2004CH. It has the same 1003 body with the slightly larger 2004 spool and a faster gear ratio!

Re: Panfish and trout reel pairing
Ya I'm in love with the shimano C2000 sized reels for UL trout. I'll be purchasing more compact frame reels like the C2000 shimanos and 2004CH daiwas in the future for sure.
Op you'll want to take a look at the UL thread there are some great discussions and information there on reels as well.

Leaning towards the powerpro ci4+. Anyone have any experience with it?

Re: Panfish and trout reel pairing
Another vote for the Luvias 1003! I used to Exist 1003H native customs matched to my G. Loomis TSR rods. Due to a lot of use and old age I have begun to replace some with Luvias 1003 from the current series. I could not be happier with them. I am debating sending my my natives back to Japan for complete overhauls. But I might not. I do have a brand new extra Luvias 1003 I am not using if someone wants it. Drop me a PM. Also another vote for the 2004CH reels too. Not my preferred size but they do match up to longer rods well. As always just my .02.
