Pitching Reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Pitching Reel

Post by striper15 » Wed Oct 02, 2013 7:56 am

Hey Guys -

In the market for a reel that will be primarily used for pitching lures in the ½ to 1 ounce range. Looking for the following criteria:

*small, compact size
*left-hand retrieve
*solid gearing
*the highest "IPT" (Inches Per Turn) possible combined with the lowest gear ratio (for example, rather have a 6:3 reel with 30” IPT than a 8:1 with 30” IPT)

Have only experience with Shimano, Daiwa and Revo reels; like all three. Been looking at the Okuma Komodo KDR-273VLX; great spec’s for the price. Anyone have one for a while that can talk on how it’s holding up?

Thanks for the help!

How much line capacity does this reel need to have?

Out of curiosity, why does the gear ratio matter if the IPT is the same ?

lpquick - Line capacity is a lesser concern of mine, since it will mostly be for close range pitching, Realize that you can't get everything in one reel, so this is "negotiable'-lol.

Freespoolit - Like the torque from the lower gear ratio. Don't know if this is a fair comparison, but like in your car, the lower gear ratios (like first and second) offer more torque/power than your higher speeds. Your higher gears offer you speed that your lower gears can't. In pitching around heavy cover, the extra torque helps in pulling out the fish. So if you can get high IPT in a somewhat lower gear ratio, you are getting the best of both worlds.

Steez EX. Small compact, smooth as butter, brass gears, 100mm handle, and plenty of drag.

I like the Calais 200DC/201DC reels, robust gear set, decent line capacity, extremely smooth operation. Built like a tank and should last a life time.

The reels with a larger spool 100 vise 103 size should give you a higher ipt ratio with a lower gear ratio. The larger dia spool makes that happen. Drop in a shallow spool, and you will have less weight in the spool and hold less line for an easy startup. Choose a comfortable frame and cast control system and your done. I love the alphas frame, but the drag is not great for heavy cover, so maybe a zillion or steez with a shallow spool.

Why not get a reel with the torque you require and get a shallow spool?

take a look at the LTZ ae-74
*small, compact size
Tiny, sub 6oz
*left-hand retrieve
*solid gearing
not as smooth as say an alphas or CQ but does the job well
*the highest "IPT" (Inches Per Turn) possible combined with the lowest gear ratio (for example, rather have a 6:3 reel with 30” IPT than a 8:1 with 30” IPT)
8:1 83cm IPT

Holds about 60yds of 17lb FC that should be enough for LMBs
Has a super shallow spool along with standard spool, the super shallow turns it into on of the most capable finesse casting around.

Thanks for all of the good suggestions guys. Didn't realize how much the spool plays a part in all of this as well; thanks for the info on that angry john.

After looking up those reels that were suggested, I realized that I should of added "$200 or less" for a criteria - LOL. Those reels are out of my budget for sure. Sorry; should have been more clear on that...
