What size spinning reel for Drop Shot?

Post by rangerjoe » Fri Oct 04, 2013 7:36 am

I am going to try and set up a combo for a Drop Shot rig using 8lb Flourocarbon line. I have a number of questions #1) What size spinning reel to use with this line? #2) Would a Omen Black 6'10" rod be OK? I only have one other spinning rod and that is a GL2 802S with a Supreme XT size 30, but I do own two more spinning reels another XT same size and a Stratic 2500 from maybe 10 years ago would these work?

I use a 2000 daiwa advantage with 6lb and a 2500 with 8lb. I have not used the reels that you listed but the 2500 size should be good. I use p-line or seaguar, which handle a little better than some of the harder lines.

I am using a 2000 Sol on my ML setup with 5lb line and a 2506 Emeraldas on my M setup with 8lb line and both are performing well. I was using a 2500 Advantage but the spool was very deep and held too much line even with backing it was just wasn't for me. The 2506 was a perfect replacement.

1500 size is fine, just need to make sure your reel has a smooth drag.

I use a Stradic 2500 FI for drop shotting with 8lb flouro without problem. I use the same size Stella with 8 lb flouro for shakey heads. Both handle this size line well.

if you use straight fluoro, I would go for a reel with a wider spool. 2500 size is great.

You can down size to a daiwa 1500/2000 if you use PE/braid w/ floro leader

I use 1500 daiwa Fuego with 8 lbs flouro or Stella 1000 with 8 lbs fluoro for my drop shot application.

Thanks for all the input, was hoping that I did not have to get a 4000 size reel to handle Flourocarbon. I think I will use my 2500 Stratic, even if it only holds 10 more yard of 8lb test then the Supreme XT (140yds vs 130yds).

I use a Pflueger Patriarch 9530 with 6lb P-line. Great little reel.

I'd use a 1000 sized reel. My reasoning would be the technique is about presentation, so use the lightest equipment you can get away with, and switch to a 6 lbs line.

2500 works for me.
Seems to balance best with most rods I've used.
Seemst to help a bit with line management over smaller spools when not using braid.
