First high end reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

First high end reel

Post by GaterB » Tue Dec 24, 2013 11:13 am

Hey everyone, I'm new on this forum but have been reading through the posts and reviews for a while now. Anyway, i'd like you guy's opinion about what i should consider for my first high end reel. Budget is up to about $500 and will use it for a variety of techniques and hopefully for a long time. I didn't want to make this kind of investment without getting some input from you all here first! Thanks in advance!

I'd probably find a good deal on a Steez, then buy an SV or RCS1016 spool for it. Doesn't get much more refined than that reel.

I'll assume casting reel. My choice would be the JDM Steez SV - 6.3 gear ratio does most thing well and so does the spool.

Shopping new items:

I'd recommend a Shimano Core 50MG for a domestic, Great high end reel and well under your budget. Something a bit more exotic and still in the Shimano realm, the JDM Conquest 50 is a must own. With shipping you should be just under your limit.

I might recommend the domestic Shimano Calcutta 100DC (if you can locate one NIB). Excellent reel that can do about anything except extreme finesse.

Daiwa, I'd probably go for a PX Type R (right at your limit) or try and find a Steez NIB for under $500.

If your bass fishing with thinner lines or don't need miles of line the Core 50Mg7 is a awesome reel. I use 2 for pitching (Half spool's of 22lb Fluoro) and 1 for casting(straight 10lb fluoro), my new Core felt as smooth as the 2 I've put through dozens of bass the last 2 summers. Small test of time and great performance with no time on my end tuning, cleaning etc.

The new Metanium might be worth a look if you need more line capacity. A little heavier and larger in profile but both worth research.

Good luck in the hunt!

X3 Guess I am just getting the spool instead of the cool looking reel.

SInce your looking for a reel for a variety of techniques, the Steez 100ha should fit the bill. Or save a little more money and get the Shimano Antares hg.

Have been fishing for a while? If your thumb is well trained, as I am assuming, I would go with a Steez, Conquest 50, 51, or a Pixy.

First and foremost, get over to Tackle Warehouse right now and check out their sale items. They have a few daiwa T3 reels, and even their Z reel for sale. Excellent reels for the price. I'm a big fan of the T3 platform and at that $200 price tag, it'll be the perfect reel to handle almost any technique.
