Broken Lew's reel handle

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Broken Lew's reel handle

Post by mark poulson » Sun Feb 16, 2014 11:25 am

Last Christmas I bought two of the Team Lew's Pro TLP1SH baitcasters. I love the reels.
I had the handle on one of them break today.
On a hookset, the handle on the side with the knob that I was holding for the hookset broke.
Has anyone else had this happen?

No but I haven't fish my lews too much. Nor have I read this happening to anyone else. Have you contact lews?

Not yet. Tackle Warehouse is where I bought it, so I contacted them first.
They said send them the reel and they'll replace it.
They are a class act.

Someone on Western Bass suggested I contact Lew's directly, and that they would send me a replacement handle.
I'll let you know how that works out.

the service manager at lew's—rick—is outstanding...i emailed him once about a minor issue (setting the brakes on the BB1)...he even gave me his personal cell phone number in case i had a question for him while i was on the water! in fact, everyone i've talked to lew's is nice.

That's encouraging. I've emailed Lew's, and am waiting to hear back.
Ideally they will send me a replacement handle outright. If they want me to send back the broken handle, no problem.
If they want me to send them the whole reel for a swap, I'd rather do that with Tackle Warehouse, who have already offered to do that.
A handle is a lot cheaper to mail than a reel.

I just got off the phone with Lew's, and they are sending me a new handle, free. Plus they are upgrading it to the 85mm handle that comes on the newer Pro series. I guess they have had issues with this handle before.
Great customer service.
Thank you Alison.

another reason for them to update the Lew's TP. I want to see a TP 2 with speedcast braking system (bb1 pro's braking system), and a stronger handle.

I haven't seen the updated Pro yet, so I don't know if the brakes are the same as the BB1, but I like the brakes on the reels I bought.

It hasn't been updated at all, but I think they should plan an update for the reel.

The equipment I have now is so good, I can't see me upgrading any time soon, unless someone is giving those reels away.

They'll have to prove it to me...I am still waiting for them to measure the length inside the "bend/bow" of the 95mm Lew's BB1 Pro Speed Spool carbon handle. Apparently, the rep says that it "will not" fit any reel without a bent drag star (in this case an old school Daiwa straight drag star).

Which is incorrect.

Glad they took care of you and upgraded!
