Used Core 100mg VS new Curado I

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Used Core 100mg VS new Curado I

Post by lape0019 » Fri Mar 07, 2014 9:14 am

I had this conversation with a friend of mine today and he thinks I am off my rocker for wanting to buy a used Core over the new Curado.

My question to the TT community is what would you choose? A used Shimano Core 100MG for $20-30 more or a new Curado I.

I am looking forward to this debate!

IMO, it depends on what you would be using it for.. 200 sized spool vs 100 sized spool.

I would buy the Core. For that price if its mint, jump on it. The Curadi will be around a while Im sure, lol.

Buy the Core. If you're not completely satisfied, you can easily get your money back out of it.

I was contemplating this as well but seeing as I cannot for the life of me think of any reason why I need another 200 size reel, let's just say the 100 size is all I need.

I would go with the curado. If it was a core 50 or 100mg7 then It would be different

Depends, if the core is mint then probably go with that. Otherwise go with the Curado, no use buying someone else's problems

x2 The feel is nice with the 50's and 100's. I have never fished the 6.2:1 Core 100Mg but for cranking, spinnerbaits, plastics it should be a good all around reel. Those spools cast a mile and the reel palms perfect IMO….Japan vs Malaysisa..I wouldn't spend over $220 on the Core 100Mg look around.

If you are talking the core 100 mg7 there should be no debate. It is without a doubt one of my favorite reels. The casting performance is amazing without being super touchy like a lot of high end reels that are known to be long casters. The reel is super smooth and the ergonomics and feel of the reel is awesome. I own several metanium mg7's and I prefer the core because of the brass gears. In fact I have put the core mg7 brass gears in one of my metanium's. Just my opinion.

in my hands, the original core was a disappointment.

I am talking as out a 100mg. The 6.2:1 gear ratio with aluminum gears.

The 100mgfv is essentially the same reel as the 100mg7 and I agree with everything you wrote but see more of a need for a lower gear ratio in my arsenal. I am getting the sense that I am not the crazy one in my debate.

The Core is a great reel. I hadn't even thrown in the fact that I could probably sell it and not lose money should I want to go another route which is a great point in itself.

X-ship may be worth it to some, but it is not a feature that will make me overlook a good used Core ...

Minty Core as well for me. One of the most comfortable reels I've ever fished and is a pleasure to cast. You can always get the CU-I later.
