Replacement for the Chronarch 50mg

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Replacement for the Chronarch 50mg

Post by OThessalonikios » Thu Mar 13, 2014 3:04 am

Hey Guys,
I'm looking to purchase a few new reels similar to the Chronarch 50MGs that I have.

I love these reels because they are really light and easy to palm.
Main applications is jerkbaits and topwater fishing so every ounce makes a giant difference in how your forearm and wrist feel throughout the day.

Of course, I'm cheap... I purchased my MGs when they were being closed out.
Is there anything out there in the $150 and under range that can match this?

Again, keeping the reel small and light are my priorities.

Thank you.

At or around $150, if I didn't keep the 50MGs, I'd say Chronarch 50E (if you're still thinking Shimano). I think the Chronarch CI4+ or a Core variant would give you closer to the performance level you're used to.

Ehhh... I was afraid of this.

I look at many of the smaller framed reels and they're still 2+oz heavier. That makes more of a difference than the size as I feel comfortable palming most any reel.

I'm with Bootytrain, get a Core50. It is an exceptional reel!

Honestly there isn't a sub 6 oz reel in the CH50MG class for $150. One of Shimanos better efforts. I have 3 of them and paid just a shade under $200 for mine on close out.

the 50mg is a $250 reel. Only closed out at $150, for similar reel at similar price, you would need to have to wait for the next closed out deal on the core. You could try the T3 closed out deal at TW now, but that's a Daiwa reel.

If you like Chornarch 50MG, you will love Core50mg7. Price on second hand is much cheaper.

Daiwa: Sol/Alphas/Pixy

Shimano: Core 50/Aldebaran/Scorpion 1000XT

Personally, I would look for a clean TDZ and add a Steez SV spool.

In the end, as mentioned, $150 will be a tough budget to meet, although you can find some Sols and Alphas in this price range...maybe a BPS Prolite?

Pflueger Patriarch XT is small, weighs 6.8 oz., and has 9 ball bearings and a spool that weighs just 12.5 g. with its bearing.

I bought one new for about $150 on that auction site. Great reel.

Core 50 MG is the closest you will find to the CH50MG, but be prepared to spend $100 more than your target price (of $150) for a used one.

You may stumble across a used CH50MG for a decent price. One popped up in the FS&T section a little while back. Not surprisingly, these reels hold their value quite well since most guys that have used them know the quality and performance level of these little treasures. Just be patient. :D

Thanks for the reply everyone.

I may look for a used Core (or wait until there is a 20% sale somewhere).
$150 is a bit cheap for a 6oz reel which is understandable...

Thanks for the responses.

Any input where or how you'd look for a core 50?
Look used? Wait for a sale?

If you have close $300 to spend, wait for sale and buy @ 20% off (-$70+). Find a Shimano Rep willing to part with a new one at discount. Troll the auction sites and the FS&T section of the various fishing sites and look for a nice used one (use the PM feature). ;)
