best reel for lure 3g-12g

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

best reel for lure 3g-12g

Post by sivas » Tue Mar 18, 2014 6:03 am

Hi guys..need advise on which baitcaster would be best for casting lures from 3 to 12g..drag needs to be high about 10lbs atleast. I was thinking either tatula or mgx...can the mgx cast 12g top water plugs or would it be hurting it too much??...and i am landbase at most times so distance casting is also a crucial point.....

The tatula isn't going to throw 3gram lures. You are probably going to have to get something like a metanium or t3 and get a shallow spool.

I am confused..

3g weighs a bit less than 1/8 oz, and BFS style reels excel at casting 1/8 oz or less. You would probably be using around 4-8 lb line on these BFS reels, so 10 lbs of drag wouldn't be necessary. If you used any higher than 10 lb on these reels, you wouldn't hold enough line to make a long cast, or you could even harm the spool since BFS spools are thin and lightweight. BFS reels tend to have lower drags as well.

I think we can immediately count out the tatula since it has a heavy spool and a ton of line capacity which makes the spool even heavier. Casting distance with 3g on a tatula would be very bad.

The MGX would do better casting 3g than the tatula since it has a lighter spool and less line capacity, but it would not cast very long.

I think BFS is your only option here if you want to use casting gear. I would look into a pixy, conquest 50(s), or some of the other daiwa/shimano reels that have shallow spools available.

Hope this helps..

I have a Scorption 1000xt, stock spool, and a core 51 and a Metanium MG7 (which is a JDM Core 101 in 7:1 ratio)...and to be honest the MG7 is the best caster especially at 5/16 of an ounce or less. I've never tested it with 1/8 oz, but it will throw 3/16 ounce probably 30-40 feet depending on rod. I did upgrade the bearings to BOCA 7's.

I actually just ordered a Daiwa PX68 Pixy...and I'm expecting it to really perform from what I've heard. TT did a review on it here and it can be had for about $350 now (JDM sites). Or if you really want to break the bank you could always check out the Pixy Type R, TackleWarehouse has them...but they are very pricey! Good luck

Core50 easily get 60+ feet with slightly less weight.
I throw a 1/8 Mini FatRap crankbait and its actual weight is under 3/16 but over 1/8 right at .1513oz

Well that's just an underhand sidearm cast similar to flipping...I've never tried to heave a 1/16 oz jig head with a 4" chomper on it as far as I can. I'm estimating that at 3/16 of an ounce. In my experience the MG7 beat my Core 51 at every weight.

It refers to a popular type of reel design rather than a single manufacturer. Shimano and Diawa both make BFS style reels with the aldebaran BFS and t3 air being examples.

Using a high pound test mono or braid for backing will assist keeping a spool light which is important when casting light baits.
