New Reel for skipping jigs
New Reel for skipping jigs
I am looking at putting together a new combo for skipping jigs under docks. I am trying to figure out what reel to pick up, I currently use curado 51 with orange seal bearings and a 7' MH rod. I was looking at the new metanium XG , CI4+ . let me know if you have any other suggestions (has to be a Lefty) in the $400 price range and below.
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!

Core 51mg. Fast gear ratio / IPT, small profile, and great braking system for skipping. Put on 4 tabs and it is "easy mode".

Re: New Reel for skipping jigs
$400 opens you up to a lot!!
A light spool works best IMO as the lighter the total spool weight the less momentum it carries and hence quicker acceleration and braking response either by your thumb or casting brakes.
the core... I never got to try skipping with it, when I hadn't started, however I have used a VBS reel (CQ51) to skip rather well.
I wasn't a fan of doing it with DCs but that maybe due to myself just starting out the technique at the time.
I think any reel with a very light spool and sophisticated braking system will do best.
I found any SV spooled reels and the Met'13s excellent for the task. At $400 the Met sits in this category along with the SS SV.

Can't really pinpoint the exact reason... But I like skipping with VBS reels better then the SVS. Core gets my vote... Then again I a biased!
Re: New Reel for skipping jigs
I'm going unconventional with this recommendation.... I use a zebco 33. I have a whole quiver of curado e series and stradic spinners but prefer the spincast for skipping. Takes the worry out of the process. My 6 year old can skip with it.

The VBS is good...2 brakes is great for casting, pitching skipping... I wonder why they didn't make it with just 2 brakes. The spool is very light too. around 10g from memory.H8R wrote:Can't really pinpoint the exact reason... But I like skipping with VBS reels better then the SVS. Core gets my vote... But...still like the Met more.
Re: New Reel for skipping jigs
Thanks everyone for the replies!!! I have a core 51mg already and really like that one as well. I am thinking I have narrowed it down between the 2013 Met and the new SS SV.
My next question at least on the Metanium I have heard you can get them in the $350 range from Japan but I checked Plat's and they were $400 at that price it would probably be easier just to get it from TW for$ 419? Is there another reputable Japanese dealer to buy from?
THanks!

In your price range...and a regular sized bass reel...I think their are really the only 2 choices worth consideringdan1942 wrote:Thanks everyone for the replies!!! Yeah there is. Akihito from Marunouchi does them too. This guy has shipped closed to a dozen reels to me and as much again for my friends thus far. Good operator. He's selling for $320

Re: New Reel for skipping jigs
A gentleman recently posted on another forum that his favorite reel for skipping is a Zebco 33 even tho he owns some of the reels mentioned in this thread. His 6 year old son has no trouble skipping with it. Slightly less than $400. You can send me a reward for saving you so much money. i'd like a T3-1016HSL before TW sells out of them.
Re: New Reel for skipping jigs
Wow I could get a bunch of zebco 33 's for $400 . What is the website for Akihito from Marunouchi is it marunouchishop.com?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: New Reel for skipping jigs
The T3 seems to have a bunch of bad reviews on TW? I was thinking the T level thing might be really good for my jig setup because I am either skipping underneath something or Flipping the jig?
Re: New Reel for skipping jigs
Plus at the 198.00 price I could then order a SV spool for it ?

Yep don't worry about the page http://marunouchishop.com/index2.html just email him directly on what you want.
The t3 is great but I can't cast it while palming w/o re-engaging the spool
