Why are reels like golf clubs???
Seems like allot of folks want the latest and greatest to make them cast better, cast further or what ever is being pitched. Whats wrong with a reel that is discontinued or a couple years old? I have a could of Abu Garcia 4007lp that are still in the box and they were high when they hit the market but since they were discontinued it seems like there is little interest?

Seems like a lot of Texans (especially) still play with Ping Eye 2's.

It's not the drastic change advertised, but until drivers ALL reached 460cc, there were some generations that were worth the upgrade.
Irons, wedges, and putters though? LOL...

Re: Why are reels like golf clubs???
Everyone wants the latest and greatest. Reels are more like cell phones in that regard.
Re: Why are reels like golf clubs???
Cuz we make them like golf clubs, but they ain't. You can fish with one reel most of the baits, most of the times, for most techniques. Of course, trying to keep a buzzbait on top is going to be easier with a faster reel than with a slower one, or said in another form, when trying to keep a buzzbait on top the job is done by the reel, so it's your choice.

Golf balls = lures : each perform differently and excel in different situations
Club Heads = reels : some better for distance, some for accuracy, some for pitching
Shafts = rods : different lengths and flexes and materials
Cart girls = fish : we are all just trying to catch one and maybe take a picture

Most of the guys in my office golf, I do not. They would always ask me why I had so many rods/reels. I would tell them it is just like golfing, they have different clubs for different purposes. I have different combos for different purposes. I wouldnt put with a driver, just as I wouldnt throw a crankbait on a Heavy Power rod with a 7:1 reel.

I hope "Nothing." as the vast majority of my reels aren't the latest and greatest with the newest one being the discontinued T3 1016. I don't really see any more distance with this reel than with ones that are much older such as a Purple Alphas, Patriarch XT, TD-Z, Trion, older gold Carbonlite, etc. I enjoy my old Abu Black Max 1600 reels with lighter baits although I wouldn't turn down a handle upgrade.

If you break one, your reaction after the initial anger is "whoo! time for upgrade!"
Both take five or six hours to do, and don't involve women.
Both are obscenely expensive and only explainable to women in either purse or shoe equivalents.
Both often involve clothing that won't help you get lucky in a bar.
Both only require 4 or so rigs to be effective, yet we make that into 12 or so.
Both create exaggeration corrected only by pictures or witnesses.
One is something I hate all of the time: one is something that irritates me only some of the time.

Just imagine you could only fish 1 rod / reel / line / lure for the rest of your live. Give you the chills doesn't it.
Re: Why are reels like golf clubs???
They are absolutely not the same .... Not even close.
I never heard of anyone that flung his rod and reel 25 yards out into the water after missing a cast.

Since when you need an "excuse" to purchase a nee reel or a new rod ?
All that mumbo jumbo explanation about golf clubs, balls n´stuff is that, mumbo jumbo, you can do fishy business with one setup, it ain´t perfect but it will get you there but if you can drive to your destination on a Ferrari why the hell not ?
Nothing is funner than purchasing stuff you like like rods, reels and baits ..... what I don´t understand is why my wife need to purchase all that junk she gets like purses, shoes and rags, just wasting my hard earned cash in garbage.

Tellin' it like it is ^^^.
I want to live by a "do whatever makes you happy no matter what" lifestyle, and the things that I enjoy are fishing and buying fishing rods and reels. Whatever it takes.
