Finesse Special spool in an Alphas

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Finesse Special spool in an Alphas

Post by rtf » Fri Nov 21, 2014 4:31 am

Would the Finesse Special spool be a good choice in an Alphas 103F throwing 1/8-5/16oz plastic? There are many threads on Alphas spools but they none strictly deal with Finesse Special, they jump from spool to spool and it gets confusing. The more exotic spools are not in my budget.

I would try an Alphas Finesse Custom. It comes with a shallow spool already. Not as finesse as aftermarket spools but a good start.

I already have the 103F, just looking at trying the Finesse Special spool.

The spool I have in mind is the I'ZE Factory Finesse Special spool that comes in the Pixy PX68, not the Megabass Finesse Special. Any one ever used one?

I have one in my pixy, but if you drop it in an Alphas/Sol without spacers there will be a gap around it.

Can throw some really light stuff with it. I throw UL hard baits and finesse plastics with mine. Really like it

I have the spacers thanks to new2BC4bass from this forum. What rod and line do you use with that set up.

Rod is a custom Phenix UMBX 700L (casting blank, not the S700L) and 10lb suffix 832 with a 6-10lb leader. The rod's actually a bit more powerful than I really wanted for this app. It's really similar to a SC S70MF in action and power. Makes a great 1/8 jig and light plastics rod. Also works well with hard baits up to 1/2 oz.

I'd say the sweet spot for the rod is 3/16 to 3/8 oz. Doesn't quite load like I'd like it to for 1/8 and under, it'll do it, but it could be better.

Thanks for the help. It sounds like this spool will work well for me. I also prefer braid and I was hoping to use 10# also. Now to decide on a reasonably priced rod.
