Trying to decide between these two reels for a pitching applications

I'd also go with the Shimano but that's basically a personal preference. The Pixy is a fine reel as well so either way you go you won't be disappointed.

There's a difference between a Pixy and a Pixzilla. Beef up the drag on a Pixy and you really get a new reel.

Out of the box for general use, XT1000 IMO. It's a very nice reel indeed.

Pixy excels with light baits out of the box. Also an excellent reel that is light, smooth and palms well.

Not saying you couldn't load the Pixy with some 20 lb braid and use it, but the drag is exceptionally weak and you'll find yourself putting your thumb on the spool when you set the hook. Upgrading drag washers eliminates this.

As Mhood said, with upgrades the Pixy can be something really special.

I thought it wasn't until you added the TDZ line guide that a Pixy became a Pizxilla...

Though I don't own a XT1000 nor ever have based on line capacity and better stock drag it would be a better reel out of the box as stated. For general use that is. I am very happy with my Airy Red Pixzilla and my PX Type R I use them for senkos, wacky rigs, small cranks, and jig/trig.

I don't think you can go wrong with either.

It's all about the drag actually. If the PX68's drag isn't strong enough...upgrade that drag stack. I have a Pixzilla that D.R. Fielding put a "special" Alphas drag stack on and it runs 30 pound braid on my MB 7-11 Destroyer flipping stick. I can lock it completely down. And yes, the Pixzilla is a pitching machine.

D.R. used to use Carbontex. You might check with them about a PX68 drag upgrade. I don't own a PX68 so I can't say if you would even need a drag upgrade. I can only speak to a Pixy and a Pixy's stock drag is notoriously weak.

According to the test done by TT the PX has a drag pressure of 8.8 pounds. That should be sufficient. TT review of the Pixy put drag pressure at 3 pounds. That I would consider pretty weak unless never using more than 6# mono.

For braided line don't you think a weak drag is a plus?

I can't think of any fresh water situations when you need more than 8.8lbs of drag. If you're trying to pull a log off the bottom, there are better ways. Not to mention, you can always use your thumb for more drag. I just spooled my PX-R yesterday and can't get over how solid and smooth it is. Drag seemed more than I'd ever use.
