Tdz price question

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Tdz price question

Post by 5bites » Wed Feb 11, 2015 5:05 am

I found a Tdz US trail locally for $70. It's pretty rough cosmetically. What do you all think it's worth? Smdoes the U.S. trail designation have any significance? It's been a while since I've had any tdz's.

It just the us version of deeper spooled tdz. 70 isn't bad price if it works and the front plate can be replaced for cheap if it's in bad shape.

how is it mechanically? you'll most likely have to detail clean it and replace the drag. while your at it change the bearings if needed. any damage to the spool? the reason i asked is because one of my used reels i bought had major spool damage and wasn't shown in any pics :(

More accurately, the "U.S. Trail" version is the 100M with a 5.7:1 gear ratio, 90mm handle, and deeper spool (more line capacity) than the 103H. The 103H is 6.3 with an 80mm handle.

If it is mechanically 8/10 or better you could probably sell it on here for close to $100. Maybe more.

I seem to be paying $100-$200 or so lately for TD-Z's, depending on condition...but that's with minimal rash. A "pretty rough" subjectively yeah under $100 for sure. I am buying Lefties (ML's) though some sometimes the price is a bit higher due to less available typically... Type R+'s closer to $200. TD-Z's are fantastic - very palmable, very light and strong. 103's a pitching machine, 100's a casting demon. 5.7 good for crankbaits and spinnerbaits, 6.3 good for an all around ratio. Upgrade the drag for sure, bearings if so desired. Gigas spools are very good for a non-exotic. I have several steez and would put a well maintained TD-Z right up there with them, really.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I've only had one tdz over the years. Several steez, alphas, a few zillions, and now t3's and t3 ballistics.

This one is a righty but I use leftys. A right would be good though because my right hand can start hurting when throwing reaction baits.

I ended up going and checking on this reel this weekend and it was still there! So I negotiated a really good price and bought it. It's every bit as ugly as I remembered but it'll be my rat rod reel I guess.

Anyway you guys mentioned it having more line capacity. Did it still retain a V shaped spool?

Yes it is V-Shaped. The spool is also the same size as the Zillions and NOT the same size as the rest of the TD-Z's.

Ahhhhhhh yea ok. Now I remember. It's been so long since I've messed with tdz stuff. If I remember right this spool is also one that fits the fuego. This should be a pretty decent medium crankbait reel.

Yep, it'll work good for that. I use my 100M for spinnerbaits and find I really like that stock gear ratio for them.

The handle and spool typically sell individually for $60-$80, depending on condition. And that spool will turn a Zillion into a casting machine. If you got it for less than $70, you got a heck of a deal! =D>
btw, Daiwa has discontinued that 100M spool as an available part, so the demand will likely increase.

I have bought a couple TDZ Frakenreels (have parts from other reels) on ebay. One thing to look out for is the handle and drag star. If they are not original, you may have a reel with parts from other reels inside and out. I'm thankful for Ian for getting all the correct parts and now they are better than new.
