Date my Daiwa

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Date my Daiwa

Post by jeff h » Fri May 08, 2015 11:02 pm

Daiwa Procaster Mini PM-100

I'm guessing mid-late 70's??

Cool little reel, oldest Lo-pro "ultralight" bass caster I know of. I know Daiwa also made a Millionaire Mini round "ultralight" back then at some point too.

Some pics please
The first of the smaller low pro daiwa were around from the early eighties (classic teardrop shape)

I don't have any pictures to post. Early 80's sounds about right. I will get some pictures of it when I'm done with it. I'm going to swap to a longer handle and put some bearings in place of the spool bushings if I can. I'll see if I can do anything with the drag too. Then I'll catch me a few fish with it before I put it away. :big grin:

Okay, so let's twist this a bit different direction...

What is the oldest lo-pro "ultralight" or BFS reel in Diawa history? I don't remember anything before this PM-100 being labeled "ultralight" coming from Daiwa. Is this PM-100 the origin of Daiwa BFS reels?

Does your reel have magforce or centrifugal braking?
This will help age the reel.

Nope. No magforce braking. it has a simple 2 pin centrifugal system that's non adjustable

That is then one of the very early 'mini' models.
Mine is the later JDM magforce(magservo) mini edition.

Nice! I also still have my PL-100 that I bought new. I just don't remember what year, but seems it would have been prior to 1980??

Finished it tonight. Solid 9.5 condition reel now but the handle is not factory original ( I do have that though). All that's left is to catch a few fish on it. :D

This topic is very misleading... I though this was a thread about somebody lending out their high end Daiwa for a fishing date

Nobody in their right mind would do such a thing though! :D Say you have a pristine example of a Alphas Type R (or whatever spins your spool), would you lend it out? [-X

Just wanted to share a quick comment on this reel.....

While it feels a little strange in hand and the old technology is... well overall the age of this reel shows itself in use, but....after adding bearings to the spool in place of the bushings this old reel casts WAY better than I had hoped it would. I am quite surprised and it is matching some very nice modern BFS reels in distance so far.
