The 51S is a classic, and it is still difficult to beat.
It's also a work of art, and built to survive the end of days.

My first choice would also be the 51s. If you dont mind swapping spools, get a regular cq51 and pickup the avail trout spool. Way better then the stock 51s spool

Search hi and low for a Cardiff 50dc
Re: Best round reel for BFS - out of the box
Shimano Conquest 51S seems hard to find (I will keep looking) and the Shimano Cardiff 51DC will set me back around 800 USD (after tax) from ebay/ibuyjp. Is the new Conquest 101(HG) a decent substitute ?

The 51s is a completely different beast when it comes to finesse fishing vs a 101. The 101 works best for 3/8 oz and up in my opinion. You can spool a 51s with 3/8 oz and can handle under 1/8 oz easily with the right rod. Just realize line capacity is minimal on a 50s - I use 2# diameter, 10# test, braid to have sufficient line for long casts. Even using the braid the 51s can be spooled, but it will easily handle light baits the 101 can't touch. Keep an eye out here and on the auction site - 51s reels still show up. The other option is a finesse spool in a 51.
