Daiwa Steez SV

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Daiwa Steez SV

According to the TW listing, the higher speed reel weighs .6 oz more, 5.8 vs 6.2 oz.
Why?

STEEZSV103H Right 6.3:1 5.8 11BB + 1RB 14/100, 16/90 $399.99 3+
STEEZSV103HL Left 6.3:1 5.8 11BB + 1RB 14/100, 16/90 $399.99 3
STEEZSV103XS Right 8.1:1 6.4 11BB + 1RB 14/100, 16/90 $399.99 3+
STEEZSV103XSL Left 8.1:1 6.4 11BB + 1RB 14/100, 16/90 $399.99 1

I understand the gear ratios are different, but the housing is the same size, so the gears are probably the same diameter, just a different number of teeth per inch.
Can that make such a big difference?

If it's like the EX then the 6.3 are probably aluminum and the 8.1 brass.

Each knob weighs 1/10 of ounce more also. X2. so 2/10 of an ounce total just for knobs weight difference.

You have to change diameters to get different ratios. Teeth count is a none factor. The ratio would stay the same if the diameter was the same and only the pitch of the teeth would change. The weight difference comes mostly from the main gear being bigger.

Does that mean that there is a lot of empty space in the lower gear ratio reels?

Why would they have different knobs?

Received my Steez SV 103XS

First Impression....No Oil and No Neoprene Steez Cover/Bag.

Will need some water time to compare to my 6.3SV and 8.1Ltd SV.

I'm digging that side plate. That looks sharp with the Daiwa logo.

How does the retrieve feel with almost no tension from the tension knob? Similar to the LTDs?

Am I the only one that hates those knobs? Lol No oil and no bag? At $400 every reel should come with oil, no excuses for that.

Love the knobs...For fishing they are great regardless of what they look like to some...functionally they work great...no need for reel grips anymore....I agree on the OIL and no bag....But again the $499 and $599 price is what everyone bitched about.
The $349 TD-Z of 15+ years ago did not have a bag and no one complained. And that TD-Z finish definately needed a bag.

I actually picked up the 103H earlier today from a buddy who owns a local tackle store. I spooled it up and made a few casts in the backyard. So far, so good. I'm anxious to try it out tomorrow. \:D/
