New Fuego Baitcaster

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

If we don't buy the reel, maybe Daiwa will come back next year with the proper revamp? 8-[

I'll bet if they priced it over $300 it would get more respect.

Funny how a reel that weights 7.8 oz, with 12 ball bearings, would have been one of the premier reels of any manufs. lineup fifteen years ago, and would have sold for more than $200 easily.
But now it is seen as heavy, and old fashioned, because it is all aluminum.
I'm as guilty as the next guy when it comes to loving lighter baitcasters, but I would have loved to have found these reels fifteen years ago at that price!

When the Fuego came out in March 2005 it weighed 7.4 oz 7 bearings at $ 230. At that time the best reel I had ever own. Still have 1 in my current lineup. With upgrades it's a casting machine. Note Zillion came out at $250 in 2006.

There are quite a few of good casting reels made from Aluminum that weigh less than 7oz, but for some reason Daiwa can't seem to make one unless it is over $300 and is magnesium or Zaion.

I have four Smoke 100 reels that are all aluminum, and weight 6.2oz.

How do you figure? The Alphas SV is $200, aluminum, and 6oz.

Yeh maybe in the JDM market but here in the states that reel is 289.00!

For what they can be had for on the auction site I may pick one up as it fits a niche I've been searching for. For $100 it may be the first reel I really get my hands dirty with as far as taking it apart and tinkering around with as I won't be too upset if I ruin it. And with no first hand experience with it, it doesn't look too shabby on paper as long as you aren't concerned about weight.

If you have a cellphone camera, take pictures as you go, so you'll remember what went where.
I put out a clean cloth (so dropped stuff doesn't bounce) and then put the parts in line as I remove them, right to left.
Helps me keep stuff organized, and that way I put it back together the same way it came apart.
Watch out for the two little springs on the spool engaging mechanism. They can get lost easily, so take them off as soon as you see them.
It's fun. Good luck.

That's still under $300. Not sure why you would buy the USDM version anyway. I can order one from Japan and have it to my door in less than a week. If anything goes wrong with it, send it to Ian.
