What are the must have reels ?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

What are the must have reels ?

Post by Jdmbassman » Sat Nov 21, 2015 12:18 am

Hi all,

With your help, I am now very familiar with the rod offerings from the NRX, Megabass and Evergreen lines. I have my eye on the Luxxe Oltre B70H and the Poison Ultima 170MH for jigs but now my attention turns to what are the must have reels.

A list of what I have and how I use them is detailed below;

Spinning
(Drop Shot) Shimano Stella C3000XGFI with 7lb Sniper
(Shaky Head, Tubes and Wacky Rigged Senkos) Shimano Stella C3000XGFI with 10lb Sniper

Casting
(Jig Rig & Light Plastics) Alphas SV (Mods T3 Air Spool) with 7lb BMS
(Shallow, Med & Deep Cranks ) Daiwa Steez SV 103 XSL upgraded gear set to 4:9:1 with 8lb Reaction FC
(Buzzbaits and Top Waters) Shimano Aldebaran 51L with 11lb Shooter Defier Armilio
(Jerk Baits) Shimano Met DC with 10lb Reaction FC
(Frogs) Daiwa TD-Zillion Jdream 7.9 with 55lb Samurai Braid
(3/8oz jigs & 5" Senkos) Daiwa Steez SV103XSL with 12lb Shooter
(1/2oz to 3/4oz jigs & 6" Senkos) Daiwa TD-Zillion Jdream 7.9 with 16lb Shooter
(Swimjigs) Daiwa TD-Zillion Jdream 6.3 with 16lb Shooter
(Chatterbaits & Lipless Cranks) - Daiwa TD-Zillion Jdream 6.3 with 20lb Sniper

On my Christmas list is a Daiwa z2020 with 55lb Samurai braid that I will use for Flipping & Pitching to cover but my question to you all, are there any other must have reels ?

Thanks in advance and have a great Thanksgiving

Matthew

What's so special about them ? Do they suit a particular technique ?

The Calais DC is a great and very versatile reel that will help you with casting distance.
I have never held any of the rods you own, however, I think that the Calais will be too heavy for many of them, if not all...

I love all my reels and especially my Calais DC and my Conquest 101HG - the latter weighs 1.5 oz less (than the Calais) and may be better suited to your rods. It is also quite versatile...

I think that's why I haven't got one to date, too heavy for the rods I have. As for casting distances then all the reels I own have been super tuned by Ian Shields and even in my novice hands with the braking system on 5 out of 10, they cast a mile :)

Get one for the most advanced braking system available still, even being almost 10 years old. You might be able to get one for under 500 from TW during their black Friday deals. Oh and the Z2020 IS just as heavy as the calais DC.

I would say a TDZ platform reel is certainly a must own for any enthusiast. I would suggest a TDZ R+ or personal order which are the same reel, or an Ito but it would be a little wilder with the stock spool.

I think if you add a ZPI RC-002 spool in you have the ultimate all around reel. Good for pretty much everything and just special reels.

I honestly can't imagine pitching with a reel that big and heavy. Have you considered something smaller and lighter? For all day pitching and flipping I like something feather light with high retrieve rate - Steez SV Limited?

I just checked and the Calais DC is only 5g heavier than the Z2020z

I haven't bought the Z2020 yet so interested to know if there is a better flipping and pitching reel to heavy cover. I would have thought the heavy reel would balance out a long heavy rod nicely but I am a newbie so open to suggestions

There might be others here that pitch with a z so they may be able to offer first hand experiences. A reel can't balance out a rod very well so I suggest buying a comfortable light and fast reel and then add weight to the rod butt to balance.

The Z is a "big bait reel", you could flip and pitch with a Steez or J-Dream. Use that Z for lures over 1.5oz. My .02

An OG Conquest 300 or 400 for heavy work would be a nice addition.
I wouldn't be a Shimano fanboy if my path hadn't crossed the Chronarch D series. So comfortable to fish with and they just perform really nicely in all conditions. A must have for my collection.
The CQHG won't leave my collection anytime soon. Its a special reel for sure.
I do support the Daiwa fan camp too.
I definitely agree that a TDZ would be nice too.

I don't have any round reels to date. What's the advantage of using one over a low profile reel ?

Must have as in performance or having a rare item?
