Baitcaster for light lures

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a light tackle casting reel for light baits that wont break the bank... Was looking at the ecooda genius and Daiwa Alphas Sv and 150H... Also the exo has a pretty light spool... Any recommendations appreciated. Ronan

Any Steez, T3, or TDZ with one of the Chinese Air spools would be a very good option. You can get new T3s on eBay for about $150. You can get used TDZs for around $120 or less depending on condition. Steez are getting easier to find for decent deals.

If you prefer Shimano and like braid the Brenious is a fine reel and can go down to about 1/8th oz with an aerodynamic lure.

Alphas sv ranging between 185-200 usd new are a pretty good option. Original pixys can be found in decent condition pretty cheap if you are patient.

1st make sure you have an able rod. On my 13 Fishing Omen (gen1) 6'10ml I can cast a 1/8th chatterbait (no trailer) about 80 to 90 feet with a stock Fuego. Alphas (can increase their abilities with a new spool), Pixy, TD-Z (105 or aftermarket spool), any of the Shimano 50 series, ABU LT/LTX (or Revo with after market spool) or T3 with aftermarket spool. Lots of options also try looking on Ichiban Tackle for a used version of these reels which can allow you to improve it with spools or bearings for the cost of a new reel. Another option would to be a reel (like a Fuego) for cheap and drop a Zillion PE special spool in it.

The reel would be a decent choice, but the spool in it is not good for light baits. 3/8ths and up are fine though.

Put one of these spools in it and you are golden.

The ballistic spool is too heavy for light stuff, but the air spool would be an inexpensive option which would transform it into a finesse machine I suspect.

I've been fishing the alphas sv w/ 20lb PP, and LOVE it. Super reel. Very comfy ergonomically to fish as well.

I agree. The right rod is the key.
