Who is Ian Shields?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Who is Ian Shields?

Post by Greg64 » Sun Jan 10, 2016 8:12 pm

I've read several references to Ian Shields, who appears to specialize in fine tuning of reels. Does he have a website? If not, how does one contact him?

Thanks,

I hadn't fished before this summer and Ian Shields tuned reels have meant no backlashes for me, super smooth retrieve and casts that go the preverbial country mile. In addition, he will make your craziest ideas a reality. I am proud to have a this years model SV103 with a T3 Air spool and a Steez SV103 that has the Crazy Cranker gear ratio

My bad, it is the SV105 SHL but awesome nonetheless less, it Paired with a Super Eiger inspires me skip light weights under docks and over hanging trees

His tuning pedigree is legendary. Reels cast out rainbows, instead of line. Winding the handle feels like air. Fish jump in the boat within a moments notice of one touching a reel tuned by Ian.
All kidding aside, great guy to work with.

I fished 2 TD-Z's extensively this past summer that he polished and tuned for me last winter...I can attest to the wildness of the proverbial 103H V-spools being on-existant have his magic. And with more distance. Had I known this earlier...I probably would have not invested in so many SV spools prior....like someone else said they are backlash free.

Cast rainbows? Fish jumping in boat? Magic!?

I need to see about having him polish up my 51e sometime.

Aside from being arguably the best reel tuner around he's just an overall nice guy. I've ordered parts from him and even before that picked his brain a few times. He's always been willing to offer up any info that I asked for.
