Braid as backing?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Braid as backing?

Post by leggomye990 » Fri Mar 11, 2016 6:10 am

Does anyone use braid for backing?

I watched a AMart video and he said he usually runs braid backing on his reels than ties fluro main line with just a simple overhand knot, says it makes it lighter?

I was always under the impression that anytime you do braid right onto spool, the line will just spin freely? Or was I lied to for all these years? I always put some electrical tape or cheap mono or fluro as my backing.

I'm not sure what backing even means. I use cheap line or old line to semi-fill a spool and then splice in the line I intend to fish with. I call this backing. What you seem to describe is just filling the spool with braid and using a FC leader. What am I missing?

Same idea as what you mention, in the video AMart says he puts a few layers of braid onto his spool, than he splices fluro onto it and fills the remainder of the spool with fluro

i put braid backing on all my reels....never had any issues..stretches out a spool of flouro for an extra reel or two....i don't use any tape, just make sure the braid is laid down nice and tight...

He said braid backing with a FC main. That is what I do. I spool ten feet or so of mono first, then put a good amount of braid on and fill the rest with FC. My entire casting length of line plus a little more is FC.

Interesting, I'm going to try this.

I was trying to save fc so I ran a few layers of electrical tape than i put fc on. Going to try the braid way next reel I spool up

Why use braid when you can just pick up Dacron line for cheaper? I am also sure that A-Mart uses Dacron for backing for that very reason now, it was in his latest video about backing.

I'm struggling to see what it matters if you use braid or old mono as backing. A small weight difference may exist but honestly since the tad difference of weight is toward the center of the spool I don't see why it matters.

I am pretty convinced in having lightest spool possible, much easier to control imo. Braid also sits on the spool a lot better, when you spool it tightly.

You live in Florida John, how does your walmart not sell cheap dacron LOL

I'll look the next time I go but I have never noticed it in the fishing section.

Look next to their fly stuff. It's a very common backing for fly reels.

Dacron is basically rope.
