Which 103 to choose ?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Which 103 to choose ?

Post by smokindrags » Sat Jun 11, 2016 9:59 am

I am looking at another 103 size reel As I'm a Daiwa user
After lots and lots of reading and comparing and thinking.
I have broken it down to 2 but maybe a third
Choices are
*new alphas sv105h
*used Steez 103ha
Or maybe/slight chance if I can find one for the right price.
*Steez limited sv-tn 2014
I nearly bought the limited 9months ago but held off and bought rod instead
I am not a big T wing fan

I don't fish a lot a freshwater but I have reels to cover my saltwater times anyway.
So fresh or salt reel doesn't bother me which way.
I have the alphas 105sv and find the sv spool and mag force is a massive step up from older
Alphas Platforms over the years.
I was thinking of sticking to the alphas sv as then I don't move into a different spool sizing.

Can anyone tell me or compare on use and casting of the the alphas sv reels over the old 103ha steez platform.
As I've never owned a Steez 103
Is there anyone out there that could compare all 3 reels maybe I'm sure the limited sv would be insane
but for $400 more is it that much better would it be over the alphas sv.
I think I know the answer to my question.
But I thought I would ask the tt members for there thoughts.
Thanks all for any help

I'd vote Steez as it has a wider choice of gearing and Its a steez(which I can't afford!). Next would be the SV103 series. I want to like the SV SS 105, But it's limited gear choice turns me away.

My SV103XS has done very well with light stuff, yet still handles a 3/4 oz. bait rather well. Still in awe on how smooth it is!!

My next purchase might be a ZN SV TW 1016. I just have to try one first....

The SS SV is the best value Daiwa reel out but the Steez shares the same performance and is better made to boot, so if money is no object, go with a Steez. The braking on the SS SV is a little more than that of the Steez so if you want longer casts then a spool upgrade could defeat he cost savings.

If you have a particular technique / situation in mind then speak to Ian Shields and he will be able to transform any Steez into your dream machine.

Although, for ultimate light stuff then he prefer to sprinkle his magic dust on an Alpha SV105 with a T3 Air spool.

I am not a big fan of steez rods, but steez reel, you never gonna hate it.
