Best spinning reel under $100

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Best spinning reel under $100

Post by nikbrewer » Fri Sep 16, 2016 1:04 am

looking to get some new spinning reels. Dont use them that much, even less so now i got my Chronarch 50e tuned up and casting 1/8 oz jigs. Looking at a 1000 size for my ultralight setup, and a 2000-3000 size for me drop shot / loner rig. Dont use the drop shot much, so it will be used by my wife or friends who cant use a bait caster.

So fat here is my list

Shimano Nasci - looked at it a BPS, seems like a nice reel. Never have had issues with any of my shimanos in the past, and they cost less than the Nasci.

Pflueger Supreme - Tackletour seems to really like this reel. I have not seen one in person, but the slightly cheaper pflueger's seem like nice reels, so i think this should be as well.

What else should i be considering? I dont need the same reel for both sizes either, so if something is better in 1 size, let me know.

i actually just picked up a Cabela's Verano 2500 for 79$. It was on sale from 149 to 99, and they had a 20% off all cabelas branded items sale today. Its made by diawa, so we will see how it goes. So far it seems super smooth

I've heard good things about Doyo spinning reels such as the Pfluger President, Revo SX ect. Korean OEM, is particular Doyo, would be the direction I would naturally gravitate towards when looking for a budget spinning reel.

Whatever the most shimano you can get for the 100 bucks would be my vote. If you do your homework you should end up with a nice reel for your money

I would put 8 more dollars with it and get a daiwa Procyon. Aluminum body and all the latest technology and more than 40 bucks less than retail on eBay. The shimanos are okay but I'd rather have aluminum frame than the graphites and composites if the weights are about equal. The pfleugers are made by doyo but have magnesium frame and if you actually look at line capacities, are close in weight to the equivalent Procyon. If you just can't come up with the extra few bucks, the exceler isn't quite as smooth as the Procyon, but is still a nice aluminum framed reel and can be found under 70 on eBay. Another reel I'd look at is the as tournament 1300 by daiwa. Not the most refined or sexy looking, but with proper maintenance, you will still be using it twenty years from now. Trust me I know from experience and there's a reason it's still made the same. Because it's bulletproof and guys use them in salt and fresh around the world.

I picked up a couple of the new Daiwa RG-AB, they are well under a 100 dollars, and for a budget reel they are as good as I have used. If you see in your local tackle shop pick one up and give it a feel.

$105 for the granddaddy of bulletproof spinners, the Daiwa Tournament SS.

Superior drag, line handling and casting distance. It's ugly, dated and it's like Kryptonite to most tackle enthusiasts ... but it's been in continuous production for almost 30 years. Hmmmmm, I wonder why ??

Apologies for not staying within the confines of your stated budget, it's aggravating I know. But it deserves mention 8-)

Pflueger Supreme or Arbor. Any love for the Daiwa Fuego? I have not try it but it does look like a great package for 100$.

I ordered a couple of the new Daiwa RG 2000 reels last month for my 5 and 7 year old boys. It has 10 bearings (unfortunately not CRBB), but they are very smooth for a reel that I got on sale for $50 each. I like that the Air Bail finally trickled down to the lower end Daiwa spinning reels. The drag knob on top of the spool is cheesy, but that is my only complaint so far. My kids dragged them through the dirt in the Eastern Sierras last weekend and they did fine. I had a couple of inexpensive custom builds with Mudhole blanks built up for them and the combos came in at under $200 each.
