What is your preferred reel cover

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

What is your preferred reel cover

Post by cortman » Sun Oct 23, 2016 12:14 pm

I'm starting to invest in some high(er) end reels for my setups, and I want to start using reel covers more often. I have a couple Tackle Warehouse covers but I really don't like them. They're a real pain to get on and off, especially back on, which is always a difficult two handed operation. I'm looking for covers that protect well but are also convenient enough to use that I'll consistently use them.
I figure this community protects their reels if anyone does. :) What brand of reel cover do you prefer?

Okuma makes a nice casting reel cover that is less that $4 and it protects the drag star. Goes on and off nice and easy too. TW had them but I don't see them now.

Its model ARS-BC

Shimano and Daiwa Japan have better covers that protect the drag star too but cost $20-$25

I love the Steez covers and the Calais covers. Phenix makes one very similar to the Calais cover. http://tackletrap.com/index.php?main_pa ... ts_id=2957

Has anyone used Trey Harpel's and do you like them? They look like they'd be really easy on/off.

They are the same as the Steez. They are very easy on and off

I use Trey's reel covers. I wasn't a fan at first because they seemed a bit snug and difficult to put on. However, they do stretch out and are very easy to put on after using them on a couple trips. They fit smaller reels really well (PXR, Steez) and are snug on larger reels (Zillion). I have tried basspro, tackle warehouse, daiwa and shimano reel covers and I like Trey's the best. I'm also partial to all black with no logos so his were an obvious choice for me. I have 12 of them and they all get used. Unfortunately now I have a bin of 20-25 reel covers collecting dust.

these are the ones i prefer by a long shot. they're discontinued or on backorder or something and nearly impossible to find.
the phenix ones look similar though i haven't tried them yet.

Daiwa CVS reel covers are amaze balls. Nice thick protective neo but then I only fish Daiwa reels so branding isn't an issue.

I found a boat load on Amazon. I have bought a few of the new Steez TWS reels which come with one so I might be able to sort you out with 4 if you would like

These are my favorites. They don't kink your line.

Try the type for small round reels. They have a longer strap to wrap around the reel and then Velcro to the round Velcro piece on the side of the cover. The ones that I bought off of fleabay are either black, red, or blue and all have a small patch sewn on top for writing info on if desired. Also has a second Velcro that goes under the reel body at the handle
These are the most secure. Trust me. I have tried them all. Any of the covers you buy don't cover the reels knobs. Colored rcs knobs can and do get damaged (cut, tear) . I have sewn a Daiwa style cover to the round cover to create a custom cover that protects both reel and knobs. If you want pics pm me your email. I don't sell them. They are just my solution. Largest reels that I have tried my custom made on is a 7.9 jdream and megabass ip79 , both with 100mm handles. Works fine.

I like the cheapy TW ones for round reels and the Daiwa fold over flap ones for the rest.

I also use the Cabelas brand covers. They work great for me. I also slit the front with a pair of scissors for the line to run through. They dont unravel when cut and dont pinch the line this way.

I use genuine shimano reel covers for my calcutta's and a generic ones from eBay for my spinning reels. They are both really nice for the money.

Genuine shimano reel covers for me as well. I tried the Rod Glove ones and didn't like them.
