Reel for MB P3 Bearing Down

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Reel for MB P3 Bearing Down

Post by Cyacnba » Sun Dec 11, 2016 1:15 pm

Hey guys,

I had the chance to fish today with this Megabass rod paired with a Shimano Aldebaran 51HG, but it didn't feel well-balanced. I tried pairing it with a CQ101 at home, but it felt off too. I'm thinking somewhere in the 6-7oz should feel right. For those who have this rod, what reel is it paired with? Since it will be dedicated for jigs, I'm thinking about a reel of at least 7.9:1 gear ratio as well.

Thanks!

I have the p3 bearing down i just got from gary at the tackle trap not too long ago. I haven't really even had a chance to fish it, only once for a short spell at the pond and not a bite. But i have an alphas sv 105 on it and it's my dedicated jig setup. AWESOME tip on the rod for the 3/8-1/2 jig range as far as casting goes. I feel like with the alphas sv i've got a perfect setup for skipping jigs. That said, the alphas is still a little on the light end of your range at 6.1oz i believe.

I have a core 50 with upgrades on mine. Love it, and I also use mine for light jig fishing 1/4 to 3/8 oz jigs.

Thanks for the replies. I looked into the Alphas, but it seems it doesn't come with a high gear ratio model...

I wonder if Daiwa has a casting reel that weights between 6 and 7oz with a gear ratio of 7.9 or higher. Otherwise, I might have to consider the Met MGL XG or something similar to it.

The Steez SV103XS is 6.4 ounces and 8.1:1 retrieve. It should fit your need perfectly.

MB IS 7.9 or IS 7.1 would be awesome on this rod.

The IS 7.9 is only available as a right handed reel though... I was looking for a lefty with at least 34 IPT.

Metanium DC or Zillion SV TWS. JDM Zills have 9.1 if your into that green. Either reels would be a skipping machine with that rod.

How about a J Dream 7.9 or a IP79 or a gear swap from a STEEZSV103XSL to an IS71.
Thanks for the epiphany captain obvious

I considered the J Dream 7.9, but it's pretty hard to find one in mint to like-new condition at a decent price. Same for the IP79 and the MB IS71... I wish I had known about Megabass reels and rods back in 2011-2012, although I'm not sure how my wallet would have handled it

For now, I talked with Gary and decided to go with the SV103XSL even though it's heavier at 7.8oz. I will still be looking for an IS71 or J Dream; hope I can find one [-o<
