I have a Dobyns Fury CB rod that I will use as an all purpose stick. I fish from the shore 90% of the time so med diving and square bill fore the most part. Wondering if 5.5 or 6.3 ratio will be better?

I really like a Daiwa 5.1:1 and the Tatula in 5.4:1 great gear ratios for cranks, traps, spinnerbaits and Picasso Shockblades. I only use a faster ratio when I really want to burn a spinnerbait or crank. So yea I think those should be good.

A retrieve ratio in the 6's is better for "all purpose" applications. You don't have to go super low for medium divers and square bills either. In fact, some manufacturers recommend 6.4:1 or higher for their square bills.

All purpose reed 6.3:1 should handle most of your needs, specially spinnerbaits, squarebills, and most cranks excluding deep cranks.

I have no purpose for 5:1 reels of any type. 6:1 is my cranking reel if I don't throw traps on it. traps get 7:1 treatment

Slower reels seem to be getting passed over these days. I've actually had a rekindled love affair with them after getting a 5:3 J dream. I'm so in love with that reel it's not even funny. There's just something about it that has the 'it' factor to me. And boy oh boy, it's absolutely magical for paddletails(like the keitech fat impacts). Slow reels are also clutch for deep divers, creeping swimbaits & slow rolling spinnerbaits, but that goes without saying.

Another huge reason for my new love affair with slow reels: I'd rather reel a slow reel faster, than a fast reel slower (if that makes any sense in writing?).
And the extra power is just bonus.


To the OP: I'd definently get one in the 6 speed range (6:3,6:4, etc). Probably the best/most versatile gear ratio.

Most of my cranking reels are around 26" IPT.

A lot of guys love fast reels. And reel companies are certainly catering to that now. What's next after hyper? Sonic? Warp Speed?
You have to remember that you sacrafice power when you get speed, all things equal.
There are still quite a few applications for slower reels. But I would not opt for a low 5's ratio as an " all around".

Super important variable to factor in. More so , in my mind , than ratio if we are talking 'standard' bass reels.

I prefer 5.7.1 for squarebills mid cranks... 5.1.1 for deeper cranks..

6.3:1 is what I use on all of my cranking rods except for deep cranks. For those, I like under 5.0:1.

I like 5.8:1 the most as an all around moving bait reel. But 6.3:1 also works well and is perfect if you want to do bottom contact and moving baits in the same reel.. But 6.8:1 and faster is too fast to me for moving baits as it moves the bats too quickly and is harder to reel a bait with more resistance. For me 5:1 is also a bit too slow as when you want to go quicker its too slow.
