First round reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

First round reel

Post by Jmoua86 » Fri Mar 10, 2017 3:34 am

Purchasing my first round reel, it's between a shimano conquest 100dc and conquest 14/15. Any help, comment, eperience with either reel is welcome. Ttt

What gear ratio?

The 14/15 is SUPER smooth and palms well. I sold mine because I palm my reels like an idiot. The size of the 14/15 is pretty small in comparison to the older models. The 14/15 can cast from about 1/8oz to whatever.

The 14/15 Conquest 100s palm like the older 50s. I went with the HG (6:1 Ratio) for my first round reel and couldn't be happier...It is silky smooth, and still has power to spare. I use mine for shallow cranking. It's easily one of my favorite reels.

Here is Cal's review which is definitely worth a read if you haven't seen it:

100DC doesn't seem to be available anymore, which may indicate a new one coming out next year.

My hands are pretty small too. My buddy refers to it as the "claw" grip. I feel the tank of a reel called the Antares 12 palms way better than the Conquest. I do the "claw" grip and tuck the butt of my cranking rod under my armpit. I can crank all day and not feel a lick of discomfort.

I can't speak about the new Calcutta's, but I own several old Calcuttas and Conquests, in regular and DC versions.

JPangler.com still has 50 Conquest DCs listed on its website, and at a much better price than the Calcutta DCs sold for new in the U.S. I have one, and it's a nice reel. If you're wanting to make longer casts, such as when bombing a spinner bait or rattling lure half a mile, you'd be better off finding a 100.

I've got a calcutta 100 te dc which is the usdm version of the conquest 100 dc. I think it's a fantastic reel especially with the digital braking system. You might also consider a daiwa millionaire 103 unless you're set on getting a shimano.

ccass, I can see the problem in your grip. It's your shoes. Your grip looks like it would transmit any vibrations well.

Calcutta TE/Conquest and/or Millionaire CV-Z or CV-X 103/Luna 103.

I love Daiwa baitcasters, and I have and use reels on both the Millionaire and Luna platforms. That said, they're not in the same conversation as the Conquest, and they shouldn't be given the prices. Millionaire and Luna are excellent workhorse reels, but the Conquest is a far more refined piece of tackle. Whether you need all that refinement might be a question worth considering, but this is TT, and we don't second guess when people want to spend for the best.

Well, that's all that matters. At least you're not holding the damn thing upside down.
