SV103 with braid

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

SV103 with braid

Post by Tokugawa » Sat Sep 23, 2017 6:10 am

Anyone run the SV 103 (OG zillion frame) with braid? Does it have a high speed levelwind? Considering one for a Valdivia mate.

TIA!

I run my SV103XS with 40lb Power Pro. No problems here.

The XS 7.9 has a high speed level wind, the 6.3 does not. I've fished braid on both with no issues. The 7.9 would make a great mate for the Valdiva. I've fished an SV103XSL on the Valdiva and it's very nice, but really love how the Steez A feels on that rod...

If you have a 6.3 and want to take it up to 8:1, The Tackle Trap has an 8:1 Original Zillion conversion kit with Carbontex that takes them up to that ratio. A high speed level wind can be added too!

XS has high speed level wind and handles braid like most. I'm running 50lb YGK (diameter of 30lb PP) and very little line digging. I don't think you can ever get away from some sort of line digging with braid but with this reel you won't notice it being worse either.

Great looking XS! I own 8 SV103 reels...3 XS and 5 H reels in all in RH. Most are NIB (aside from those currently in use) and I am storing most of the rest as NIB because I think this amount of quality in a reel cannot be duplicated for current market prices. All metal made in Japan frames and side plate, brass interior parts, and so much versatility. Maybe I am wrong, but nonetheless, I love these reels!

I am using 30 pound braid on my all around combo and 65 on my XS flipping/frogging combo.

I just have a problem sometimes with the leader knot not going well trough the guides (micro guides) but that is a different topic...
