Daiwa TD Zillion HLC

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Daiwa TD Zillion HLC

Post by DenhamBruce » Wed Nov 22, 2017 2:46 pm

Ordered one a couple weeks ago from Japan and so far I'm not sure what to think of this reel. Was throwing a frog and for comparison it was getting smoked by my Citica I using the same rod. The reels wants to backlash right out of the gate unless I have the Mag set at about halfway which slows down the tale end of the cast quite a bit.

Anyone else have this reel that could comment? Doesn't seem like the spool is living up to the hype at this moment.

Check and make sure the inductor and magnets are working properly. Flush the bearings and see if that helps as well.

The HLC is for heavy baits. What are you throwing with it?
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

I use mine for a frog reel. I get good distance and it handles quite well whenever skipping frogs under overhanging tree branches and docks.

Throwing spinners an spoons upwards of half oz for salmon and steelhead. I've come to the conclusion that the spool is just a bit fast and need to be more disciplined with thumbing the early parts of the cast. My Tatulas and SV103 are much more tame!

It's a total different animal than a SV spooled reel.

Yes, you have to use your thumb with the HLC. It has approximately 40 percent less magforce braking than a standard spool.

It's a very moody, touchy reel. As stated above, it's ideal for heavier baits. i only use mine now for 1/2 oz lipless crankbaits and heavier. Those baits cast well anyways so you can really zip them out there. Very limited but I still enjoy fishing with mine.

Send it to Ian Shield and he will fix the inductor on it and you will love it. Cheap fix.

Ian changes any factory reel into a modified beast. The best super tuner out there.
