SV103- too smooth?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

SV103- too smooth?

Post by scrapiron » Fri Jul 06, 2018 8:50 am

I have a SV103H and compared to my other reels (Steez 103H, Steez A TW, Steez SV TWS) I find it very 'disconnected'- zero feedback. I've put a RCS 1016 spool in and no difference. I've tried FC and braid lines, different rods- it's like there's no reel attached.

Yes, it's smooth; butter, glass, teflon. It casts as far as I want it (FAR!) with the 1016 spool. It's comfortable to palm. It's a solid reel, it's attractive. It has the ability to leverage many different spools. It balances fine on the rod. It's a classic.

Why can't I like using this reel?

I've added a Steez EX 100mm handle/knobs and a Zaion star drag. That helped with the weight and reeling. I'm currently using this reel on MB FMJ throwing 30# Sufix 832 with a 1oz. Carolina rig. It's been sent to TTT to get the 7.9 gears swapped in and maybe a high speed level wind. Why dump more $ to this reel if I don't like it? I've switched over to all SV spool reels and adding a Steez A to the lineup isn't in the cards.

Anyone else feel the same with this reel or did I get the super special smooth edition?

Sounds like perfection. Refined is just a polite way of saying geary. Smooth is always best. If it is a righty I'll buy it.

Wonder if what you are feeling is the difference between the brass gears in your SV103 and the aluminum/aluminum alloy gears in your Steez reels? There is definitely a difference in feel between the two material types with brass feeling "smoother" than aluminim. I noticed that as well when jumping back and forth between reels.

Both my SV103XSL and my Steez SV TW are smooth. Shoot, even my Alphas SV reels are smooth. The Steez is nuts but my SV103XSL is right there with it.

Nothing touches my 12 Antares. Beyond smooth.

Yes. It is far too smooth. You really should consider selling it to me.

Try knobs with a harder material, such as the Zaion.

I can concur with your sentiment. It didn't bug me quite as much as it does you, but I prefer a more connected - yes geary, feeling. My 1st reel that felt like you are describing was the Daiwa Advantage. Just not my cup O tea.

I hated the knobs and swapped them with the OG zln. Much better feel now.

Whew- didn't think the sharks would be circling so early!

My Steez reels are super smooth, but don't have that disconnected feeling. They're not geary, say like a Chronarch MGL or Met 13 I had. Not a big fan of the paddle knobs either- perhaps I could try some firmer ones.

I'll put a SV105 on the FMJ to see how that feels; think that has brass gears as well. Surprisingly, haven't fished with that reel yet I just realized.

I agree on Chronarch MGL's connected feeling but wouldn't quite describe it as geary. Now on the other hand I finally got to try a Metanium MGL XG and I can understand it being called geary. Could almost hear it and feel a "zzzzz" in hand, not complaining, it felt great, but just had that "zzzzz".

My new Steez SV XSL has that disconnected or numb feeling I can't feel what the lure is doing very well, but my Met MGL XG with the brass drive gear is just as smooth yet I can feel everything really well. Maybe it will break in still but I won't be rushing to buy another.

I would imagine a super lightweight reel like the Aldebaran would feel amazing with Micro brass gears. That being said it makes sense why the Metanium MGL feels so perfect with brass gears (never felt one personally with brass). After saying that though I realize the Steez SV is magnesium framed and the XS ratio has brass gears... I would be totally okay with the "too smooth" feeling, for finesse bottom style fishing I hardly get feedback from the lure already (aside of the rod).

Dude you have got to be kidding me? Too smooth? Now I've really heard it all. You need to quit being a nerd and go fishing.
