Zillion TW 1516XXHL grinding feel

I’ve spent several hours exchanging parts from another Zillion trying to figure out what causes grinding feel for about 1/3 of a turn of a handle.
When I hold the reel normally in hand and crank then there is grinding.
When I turn the reel upside down (reel foot facing sky) and crank then there is no grinding.
At first I suspected the gears but when I fix the spool and crank the grinding is still there. Just little less pronounced.
Any ideas?
