That knot is your problem. You don't have to get all crazy with it like that stupid Shaw Grigsby knot you hear people talking about, but a Palomar or Clinch just won't cut it. In fact, I don't think the Palomar is all it's cracked up to be even with braid. I use a San Diego Jam for everything, moisten the hell out of it, and tighten it really smoothly and slowly. It's a *very* strong knot and easy to tie. For fluoro I do 9-10 wraps for 4#, 9 for 6#, 8 for 8-10#, 7-8 for 12#, 7 for 15#, and 5-6 for 20#. For braid I double it and use 1-3 fewer wraps. Works great! The only time I break off is on a snag, never on a fish or hook set. I have had it break on fluoro and mono when tightening the knot, but only because the line was abraded inside the knot somewhere, like from tooth marks near the hook. Sorry to veer verbose, I just feel like anyone who doesn't use fluoro at all is really missing out.hoohoorjoo wrote: Palomar knot, moistened before setting the knot, drag set right, but it still broke on the hookset. Now its braid or good old mono like Sufix Siege. I did use mono with a Zillion PE Special and it didn't give me any problems.
Also, I use 10# fluoro on my sv105 and it has a fast levelwind and it doesn't cause problems. It does have a non-disengaging levelwind and I usually do make sure it's synched up before I start my retrieve, so I'm sure that really helps keep the line from rubbing against itself and causing abrasions. It may be a different story with PE reels with completely unsychronized levelwinds. I'm psycho about using everything the way it was intended, so I'd never spool anything but braid on a PE reel, anyway.
