No concerns at all! Maybe put 40-50 pound braid on the spool with a fluro leader (when you want to use it for the swimbaits). I love mine!

These comments make me happy, even though the gears in my "A" aren't bronze alloy like the 8.6, it definitely makes me think my reel should EASILY hold up to the semi-finesse I throw at it. Only thing I would think is that 91cm (around 35.8 inches) per turn is getting pretty fast for the upper range (3/4oz) paddle tails...

Been giving this thought lately. Was hoping for some recent thoughts. Think I have a general feeling that this and the Steez A are pretty similar, but can someone who has both confirm whether or not the Steez A has the same faster line lay for braid for better distance that this Morethan has?

The main gear of this Daiwa Morethan 1000 is call Duralumin. A very strong grade of Aluminum. Strong and light and will hold up over time. They can also make brass gears, but that will make the reel more heavy. I have a few Daiwa certate spinning reels and they stay smooth for many years. The main gears of those certate are not brass either. But they look like Duralumin.

Any updates from you guys on the Morethan? Looking for a new reel and it is at the top of my list but would like to hear feedback after a few months of use.

It remains the smoothest reel I own after winching a lot of fish out of thick Florida grass. I’ve heard of at least one case of finish getting messed up on this board. Mine remains without any chips wounds, but I’ve been protecting it better than my skin, which is stupid. I prefer it over my steez sv tv, but I generally prefer more solid feeling reels and was an og zillion guy.

Check that; can’t really say it’s smoother feeling than steez; I think it just feels that way because it’s so solid and I don’t know if I could tell difference with a well maintained j dream, etc. Casting wise; it’s the deal with bass lure weight 1/4 oz and up for me.

Agreed this is my travel reel. I’ve fought dink’s, tropical fish, GT, and up to a 32 lb striper on it so far, and have casted lures from 1/8-1 1/4 with it. The bronze gear in the 8.6 is the most solid feeling gear on the retrieve under load of any of my 1000 size daiwa reels. I took my reel to Hawaii with me and only brought the stock spool with 50lb braid. I ended up throwing 3/16 oz tw Swimbaits on a jighead and was able to cast off my entire spool. I now have a steez a spool in mine so I can hold some extra line, and have a couple extra spools I keep with it in case I decide to fish different places and styles. I also keep one on my frog rod and I haven’t found a better reel to suit my frogging needs. In my opinion the only way they could have made this reel better is to add the aluminum sideplate, and move the brakes like they did on the steez ct.

I'm new to the Daiwa offerings for the most part. Picked up this reel and was shocked at how small it was, but that's me coming from many years using one of original Calais DC's for fresh. I'm curious about the post above that indicates using a steez A spool in this reel. This would add more line capacity and still offer good casting distance?

For me the spools act very similar in the morethan. I only use them to cast for distance not for controlled skipping or anything like that. I use the one with the steez a spool for a little extra capacity. With a frog on I can spool the stock spool on any cast. With the steez a I have a little extra backing left over unless I really go hard with 50lb braid.

Still loving this reel. I have it paired with a 893 NRX and it's my Texas rig setup for flipping milfoil.

Thanks. I'm going to look into finding a Steez A spool then. I like this reel, but only wish it was a little larger for my fishing...like a 200 sized I guess.
