1016 BFS Reel
1016 BFS Reel
I am trying to find a 1016 spool sized reel for a DIY spool, to go on a 2 piece Tsurinoya UL rod. I currently use one of my Zillion SV TW's and since the fishing is heating up I would rather have the Zillion on one of my 7' Medium, fast action bass rods. I am planning on getting some new rods and will have some open spots, would like to just get another nicer reel and keep the Zillion where it is, but at the same time I think there must be a used, cheap 1016 size that would work fine with the DIY spool for UL fishing. Just hate to see one of my more capable bass reels tied up for such a lightweight technique.
So are there any suggestions for a cheap 1016 alternative? Have seen some T3's on the auction sites for fairly cheap, ratio is fine as long as it is 6 gear or above. Just would like a used reel in decent shape that would work with the Aliexpress DIY BFS spool to free up my Zillion SV TW.

A T3 is a good place to start. Also you can't go wrong with an SS SV for that purpose.
This is the way.

T3 can be found cheap and, you can sell the RCS 1016 spool it comes with for about 50 bucks.

A used TDZ is also an excellent choice if you don't like the T3.

Bid on one not long ago, sure it will go for more than I bid though. The T3 confuses me a bit, TW had them for under $100 a few years back, I wasn't quite set on Daiwa/Shimano back then though or else I'd grabbed one in XH for utility purposes.IlliniDawg01 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2019 6:10 amA used TDZ is also an excellent choice if you don't like the T3.

Re: 1016 BFS Reel
You are probably thinking of the T3 Balistic. The regular T3 1016 never sold for under $100
Re: 1016 BFS Reel
T3's may be great casters, but i wouldn't even consider taking one over a tdz. A used steez can be had for like $150. SS SV is another option i'd take into consideration.
Re: 1016 BFS Reel
Yes it was a Ballistic, the full Zaion body one, I should have been more clear, the red and black trim ballistic was the cheaper version, I was definitely not talking about the silver/grey T3. That being said though, I don't know what the differences were. Think the Ballistic had riveted knobs, but I don't know if the Ballistic was 1016 spool'd or not.Fishing4Fun wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2019 11:48 amYou are probably thinking of the T3 Balistic. Re: 1016 BFS Reel
Well, it has a 1016 sized spool, but it's not the 1016 RCS spool. You're right about the handle/knobs. The frame and sideplate are basically the same on all of them. The differences are: the spool, the paint, the drive shaft (brass on the ballistic, aluminum on the 1016, which is the main difference in weight), the line guide which is nitrided on the 1016, the gears which are both brass, but for the 1016 are made in Japan and more refined, and the bearings, both in count and quality.DirtyD64 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2019 8:06 pmYes it was a Ballistic, the full Zaion body one, I should have been more clear, the red and black trim ballistic was the cheaper version, I was definitely not talking about the silver/grey T3. Re: 1016 BFS Reel
So I assume with those bearing counts, these reels have 4 on the spool/pinion, then 1 on mainshaft, 1 anti-reverse, and 1 in each knob for the 1016. Some sites list the Ballistic as having 5+1, but either way I think these Daiwa reels only had single main gear support (w/ an anti reverse bearing too), as opposed to almost all Daiwa's now, even without free floating spools, have 2 main shaft support bearings...
Re: 1016 BFS Reel
Is the DIY the matte finish 103/1016 or is it one of the older 1016 or 103 glossy spools? The only difference is the spool shaft is slightly longer on the oldee 1016 DIYs. They used to have separate 103 and 1016 sized spools then merged them. I would try and find an SS SV 103 or 105 for $100. There is a righty 8:1 105 on a Japanese site in their used reel section for close to that.

Re: 1016 BFS Reel
Steez (new and old), TDZ, T3, Zillion SV TW all accommodate 34mm spools. All can be considered bfs candidates. The trick is finding the one with the best braking magnet polarity for your specific spool. To play it safe, my suggestion would be a Steez or Zillion SV TW, T3, or POSSIBLY a TDZ.... Unless you like your reels fast and maybe wild. Which spool are you using?

I'm down to try any reel, just want to free up my Zillion SV TW. I can fish a wild reel fine, doesn't bother me. The spool I am using is the newer DIY glossy honeycomb style spool. Weighed 8 grams with bearing on my cheap scale. It isn't that new extremely light one that showed up on Ali about a week ago though, I think that one has a fixed inductor, mine has an SV style...LowRange wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2019 10:24 pmIs the DIY the matte finish 103/1016 or is it one of the older 1016 or 103 glossy spools? Re: 1016 BFS Reel
No they are 2 bearings plus the AR bearing on the main shaft on the 1016, never had the ballistic so cant confirm.DirtyD64 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2019 9:28 pmSo I assume with those bearing counts, these reels have 4 on the spool/pinion, then 1 on mainshaft, 1 anti-reverse, and 1 in each knob for the 1016. Re: 1016 BFS Reel
Cheapest choices would be T-3 or TDZ, my choice would TDZ unless you want higher have 6.3:1 gear ratio and you're right handed.
