Shimano Curado Type J

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Shimano Curado Type J

Post by LgMouthGambler » Wed May 08, 2019 8:41 am

I ran into one of these while searching for a nice D series. The price seemed pretty good, but couldn't pull much up on it. I know its got the VBS brake system, so its able to be casted. Being that it's really made to be a salty jigging reel, it has a shallow spool. Shouldn't be a problem with 30lb braid, because I'd assume I should be able to at least get 60 to 70m of line on it. Being a salty reel, and a D series, this ought to be a tough SOB for fishing bass. The coloration of the reel is quite impressive as well. A short run in the 2008 era is all I could find on info.

Anyone have or had one of these reels?

I looks similar to the Engetsu reels. They have shallow strong (heavy) spools for jigging bays with braid. I have a Scorpion 70 based Engetsu with micro mod gears. It's a neat little reel. It has a clicking drag too.

How is it for casting? What kind of baits/weight are you casting with it? What kind of line? I wish I could get the spool specs of the 200J. It looks pretty light.

The last time I was out with the Scorpion 70 based Engetsu I was throwing a 4 inch BPS Stick-O weightless on a 610ML Zodias with 20# PP braid. It cast it well. The spool is only slightly heavier than the stock Scorpion 70 spool. I hear shallow heavier spools cast pretty far with 1/2oz baits and braid. That was the logic behind the 1010 spools. My Engetsu spool like to spin and spin and is not as easily slowed by the brakes as my Casitas MGL spool. The Curado 200 J definitely is worth a shot.

I have this same reel on a 7'5" major craft ms-1 MH "finesse" rod. I use it for small t-rigs with 1/16 and 1/8oz bullets on 10lb flouro. Casts very well, doesn't seem to be much if any different than the scorpion 70. It has a huge 102mm handle so it's very powerful for a 7.8 ratio reel.

Got the 200J in the mail today. Spool is really light. I think this might be a killer toy. =D>

Spooled the reel up with 30lb braid. It holds plenty of line. The spool itself is really light, so I'm very pleased with that. I was casting a 1/2oz jig like nothing. This is gonna be a fun reel.
