Scorpion 1000XT vs Alphas SV 105

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Scorpion 1000XT vs Alphas SV 105

Post by Smalleyez » Sat Jun 01, 2019 8:53 am

I'm thinning my herd a little bit and I'm going to keep one of these two; a Scorpion 1000XT or an Alphas SV 105. I've owned them for a while, but I really haven't used them enough to form a solid opinion as to which one I like best. The main use is for general casting, mostly 1/4 - 1/2 oz. surface baits for bass and the occasional jerkbait duty to river shoreline targets. Cast-ability and accuracy are the top priority. Distance and/or finesse is not needed.

Which one would you keep?

I'm trying to get more pure, but I'm not sure I want to sell either. :-k

Both are fine reels, and will come down to casting preference. Do you like centrifugal or magnetic braking? Which feels better in your hands? I personally love the 50E platform. Have enough parts to keep mine going till I die.

Alphas SV would be my preference, but I'm a Daiwa person. I'd only keep the Scorpion for finesse duties with a bfs spool. Alphas SV is more versatile imo. My stock Aldebaran 51mg bottomed out at a quarter ounce, especially compared to the Alphas SV, which can throw an eighth plus small trailer with relative ease. Neither would be my 1st choice for baits half ounce plus, where I'm looking to go deep down field.

50E platform is more comfy to palm than the pixy/alphas platform. But the casting distance is much better on the alphas.

Upon further review....a wild swing that only TackleTour afflicted understand...has evolved.

I put the Scorpion 1000XT on a Falcon 6' 5" Jerkbait Special I have and it's balanced, feels terrific, and looks great in an understated way.

Now I could use a suggestion for a topwater rod for smallmouth that would blend well with my Alphas SV 105. :-k

That's a true TTer right there. =D>

I think a Major Craft MS-X MXC-66M would blow your mind for topwater. I have a tricked out Luna 103 on mine with a shallow SV spool and it will absolutely bomb something like a Shower Blows 105 and then the short length combined with the power and action makes it a breeze to walk the dog, set the hooks, and fight/land the fish. It's super light, sensitive, crisp, perfectly balanced, and feels great with an Alphas or really any other reel as light or heavy as you want to use. Plus, it's tough to beat the build quality, styling, and components for the price.
This is the way.

This worked itself out with just a rare bit of patience. I realized i have an underutilized Loomis CR721 IMX (with Wiebe handle), so I put my Alphas SV 105 on it and it sure feels like a winner for working shoreline cover with poppers and walkers. The end.

I just LOVE a happy ending! =D> =D> =D>
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.
