Casting + Internal Damage

I am wondering if anybody has had issues casting and having the trigger on a casting reel go back into the retrieval position causing a grind? The other day I had this issue occur on my Z2020 throwing a chatter bait. I made a cast and the trigger came back into position causing a grind. After that happened I noticed the reel had a grind to it, but as I kept using it the grind seemed to fade to the point where it seems as if nothing is wrong, but.... If you really focus on the issue while holding only the reel in your hand, you can feel it sometimes has a graininess to it. I am aware that the 3/8oz chatterbait might have been too light for this reel.

Is it possible this may have caused internal damage? Has this happened to anyone causing damage? I would open up the side plate and check it out myself, but this reel is kinda intimidating to open lol..... But here I am before I pop the side plate off.

Make sure it did not bend your spool pin.

Also..... If there are any recommendations for reel servicing let me know. Its been awhile since i've been on the forum and I havent seen too many of the OG tuners. If I cannot figure out this issue I may just send it off.

If the clutch was disengaged/reengaged during the cast/crank, then it's more than likely the pinion gear set grinding trying to mesh. There maybe some teeth damage from the main gear and pinion gear set.

I had a young buck sed me a Tatula CT who'd been suffering issues.

Well more issues caused by self infliction... Winding during a cast to stop the cast...

Now I've seen clutches engage and the pinion pop up and actually push the yolk and compress the yolk springs, littoral dance across the spool pin and do damage as above pinion engagement ramps.

One option is to source better clutch springs to ensure the pinion yolk stays down while engaged in gear.

Same thing happened to me few years back. My local reel service man had to replace pinion/main gear set because teeth damages.
I recommend contact Brian from Tackle Trap. He will help you.

I see it with people that whip a cast extremely hard, or by accident pop the thumb bar up when casting. New gear set, and spool pin is standard.

I think I found my culprit.... So I took out the spool and made a few rotations.... no issue with a grind. But as soon as I put the spool back in, there is a noticeable grind. I checked the spool pin and everything looks good. And then I looked at the pinion gear and here's what I found.......

I circled what I believe is to be the damage on the teeth on the gears. I doubt its part of the design. What do you guys think?

A new gear set and spool pin should solve the issue you’re having, but I would also double check both of the pinion support bearings. I’ve seen these bearings get rough after having a reel re engage mid cast, and I believe it’s due to shock loading of the gear and or bearings.

This is excellent advice as well. Especially in Shimano reels.

Does anyone have an extra handle nut wrench for a Daiwa Z200/Z2020, (or any daiwa, if universal) that they would be welling to give away? I just noticed I dont have on in the box. Maybe this will save me a phone call to Daiwa.

I use metric socket wrench with 10mm and 12mm sockets. Should cover all your Daiwa needs.

So I got the the handle and drag star taken off and then I removed the screw on the bottom on the handle side (took spool out etc). Am I missing a step? Because I cannot get the side plate off. I dont remember taking a reel down being this difficult... Forgive me its been many years lol.

Reel is Daiwa Z2020

There should be three screws to remove. The yoke springs should lift the sideplate up once you remove them all.

3 screws internally - when you take the spool out there will be in that internal side of the reel as per picture attached.

You will need a thin screwdriver to access one especially.
