CH MG 50 upgrades
I have four MG50 reels that I don't fish anymore because I'm afraid they won't hold up to the fishing I do now.
Is there some way to beef them up?

The Curado 100B and 100D gears fit, and are thicker across the face of the gear teeth. Not sure on availability of those parts, though. Just dont fish them with the drag locked down and you should be fine. Use them for cranks and other treble hook baits that require lower drag settings.mark poulson wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2019 11:28 amI have four MG50 reels that I don't fish anymore because I'm afraid they won't hold up to the fishing I do now.

Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Where can I find those gears?
Also, can I swap out any of the bushings with bearings?
I'd hate to ruin these reels.

Re: CH MG 50 upgrades
I read on a post here some time back that although the pinion gear has been discontinued and unavailable for a long time, the main gear for the CU100/CH50mg/CU100D reels can still be found. Although best practice is to replace as a set, I have seen many CH50Mgs with broken teeth on their aluminum main gears, and would assume that sticking in a new main gear would vastly improve/fix the reel.

I believe the Curado 100DSV had brass gears but as Riley stated the pinion gear is no longer available (BNT2405) but the main drive gear is abundant (BNT1325). Here’s a useful link for Shimano parts, they have Daiwa parts as well but not as plentiful...

Re: CH MG 50 upgrades
Correct, the 100DSV has brass gears, but the 100D (the shallow spool version) has aluminum gears, iirc. Been awhile since I've been in any of those reels, so can't say 100% that I'm remembering correctly.Jkitchens wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2019 2:54 amI believe the Curado 100DSV had brass gears but as Riley stated the pinion gear is no longer available (BNT2405) but the main drive gear is abundant (BNT1325). What are the original CH MG50 main gears made out of?hoohoorjoo wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2019 5:44 pmCorrect, the 100DSV has brass gears, but the 100D (the shallow spool version) has aluminum gears, iirc. Re: CH MG 50 upgrades
Mark, the original CH50Mg main gear is aluminum. And hoohoo is correct about the cu100D vs. Dsv. I asked on the shimano page and that is what Dan said. So from my understanding, if you plan on using heavy line, or techniques with lots of torque/drag pressure, a brass gear addition will definitely help beef the reels up. I believe the original pinion gear is brass, and those are no longer available, so you would have to mate a new brass main gear with your existing pinion gear. The part number for the brass drive gear is BNT1325. I clean/repair reels as a hobby and for fishing buddy's, there are people on here that know a lot more than me, but I have done several hundred complete tear downs/clean/re-lubes on shimano casting reels. I have seen 3 CH50Mgs with aluminum main gears that have teeth completely shorn off. Your options would be 1. use the reels until they feel rough and the aluminum main gear goes south 2. buy the brass main gear and stick it in the reels now. If anyone has any info to correct or add to this please chime in.

Re: CH MG 50 upgrades
Thanks. I ordered one of the BNT1325 gears from Southwesternparts.com (thank you Jkitchens). It should be here next week, so I'll be able to swap out one of the aluminum gears and see how it works.lifeofRiley wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2019 10:23 pmMark, the original CH50Mg main gear is aluminum. I'll post my results, if I can remember. CRS bigtime!

Re: CH MG 50 upgrades
Did they make a CU 101DVS? One of my MG50's is a left handed model.
Re: CH MG 50 upgrades
BNT1514 would be the main gear part number for the lefty.
