Deps DR-100ZX and zillion type R. The type R really benefited from a 50th handle for this application. Unfortunately, I can be a slow learner and I had to go through 2 type R handles before I made this switch.

The handles broke on you? What happened?

Yes; the first time I thought it might have been a fluke. I bought a second new and when that one broke while winching a biggun out of the grass I no longer feel that way. I have SLP (95mm) and megabass (80mm) carbon handles with which I've had no issues. I don't if it's the type r handle or if using it for heavy cover winching was the problem. In any case, they snapped. In both cases, I did not even realize it happened until I landed the fish. It was only on subsequent cast that I noticed the play in the cracked handle. Tried gluing and fished them until they completely snapped off in both cases.

I have a Tatula CT Type R/Fuego CT hybrid reel that I use. Basically took the T Wing system out of it, and used the regular line guide and Fuego sideplates. Dont care to beat up any of my nicer stuff with that kind of abuse, so I use a cheaper setup that has a stout drag and solid gear set.

I use a Zillion TWS 9.1 (non-SV) with a Ray's DIY BFS spool for punching. Havent put that spool through too much abuse but, its held up well.

For light punching / pitching, I use the SV version with a Steez SV 105 LTD spool.

I really like the faster gear ratios. The light shallow spools make pitching really nice.

Aldebaran 51Mg with 7.7:1 brass gears is what I’ve been using this year. I don’t winch on fish, so I don’t beat my reels up punching at all. Paired with either Conquest 905 or NRX 916, both great combos depending on cover. Want to try out the Bantam for punching next year.

Shallow spools save money too.

I realized this morning that I'm not breaking carbon handles while winching the fish in. Rather, the break occurs when I set the hook a certain way (with intention of getting the hook in the roof of mouth). I also realized that aluminum handles are not immune to my folly. I've broken handles only 3-4 times over the course of a lifetime of fishing. But, it happens. I'm going to have to think about adjusting my technique, if that's possible in the heat of the moment. Otherwise, it's pretty effective :D
