Shimano Antares manufacture year?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Shimano Antares manufacture year?

Post by new2BC4bass » Sun Oct 20, 2019 5:27 pm

Just purchased a used Antares off ebay at a great price. Ratio 6.2:1. What year would this be? I only saw 5.6"1 and 7.4:1 ratios listed on the reviews I read. Thanks.

Best identifier would be a pic of the reel.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

2012 Antares had a 5.6:1 and 7.4:1 ratio. Scorpion Antares had a 6.2:1 ratio, released sometime around 1997

Coming from Japan. Estimated delivery is Nov. 6. Looks like a chrome finish. Will have to see if I can still find a link for it. Will have to be from my laptop because work has instituted an encrypted search, and I couldn't even find my company's phone number using it....much less anything of value to me. :( I imagine it was because one person ruined it for the rest of us. That is typically how it works.
My email is the same as my old pp address, pretty sure you still have that one. ;)

JapanTackle is always a good source to look up specs of older JDM reels.

Unfortunately I didn't pay attention. Basically looked the pictures over for scratches, dings, etc. Apparently the ad has been removed.

According to this review http://www.tackletour.com/reviewshimantares.html the ratios in 2012 were 5.6 & 7.4. The reel I purchased is supposed to be 6.2

Japanese? Soooo...as I thought....this is an older model. Pre 2012. It should have the MG spool. How would I tell for sure?

Mid 90s (97 I believe). I have the same reel on my display case. The correct name is Scorpion Antares.

Here is a thread I did on mine.

I speak 4 languages, unfortunately Japanese isn’t one of them, that would come in handy these days  As long as it isn’t the V2(saltwater model) it should have the Mg spool.

Wow! Thanks Matt. You just reinforced why I send my reels to a professional.

I imagine as old as this reel is that I will probably send it out first thing for cleaning and making sure internals are up to snuff. Interested in another project?
