What are you cranking with?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

What are you cranking with?

Specifically, DT10 and alike lures.

Im looking for a new cranking reel and I found one of these but I am not sure.

3, Anyone using a TD Zillion NON crazy cranker reel for crank baits that dive 8-15?

4, What is your smoothest ( subjective I know ) reel you use for cranking?

I use a Calcutta Conquest 101 with braid on a St Croix legend tournament glass rod.

Its like the best of both worlds, braid for casting and crankbait depth with glass to keep my fish pinned :big grin:

Love it...

I have an old glass rod by st. Croix and think I should sell and upgrad to the newer one. Your setup with braid, what lb braid are you using ?

Hear hear.

I have a few glass rods and they are money with braid. Actually, it seems I've been ghosted on selling a couple of them and it won't hurt my feelings at all if I'm stuck with those sticks in particular. They've been very good to me.

For the baits you're talking about, on the rare occasion that I use them, I use my deep cranking setup which is an 8' glass Zillion + Zillion TWS 6.3/HH Air HD's with 30# braid. Works great! I really want to try that new Zillion 1520L 5.5:1, but considering the frequency with which I'd get to use it I can't justify the cost. That has to be one of the best cranking reels around.
This is the way.

30lb vicious no-fade braid for the last two seasons, its still going strong but is starting to soak up to much water.
I might change to a 20lb braid.

ive got a few st croix legend glass rods with bantams and they have been great. these new legend glass rods are definitely more senstitive than your older glass rods. I use to despise using glass rods but really dont mind these at all. I have the 7'2 medium- dt 6 and smaller balsa type flat baits, 7,4 med hvy - dt 10 and mid range cranks also great trap rod, 7'10" hvy - really good deep diver but not the super big cranks more of 6xd ish and cranks in that range, 7'2 hvy - chatterbaits and deep fishing larger lipless baits like lv 500. I would say the 7'4 med hvy is a good compromise of a wide variety of cranks among other baits if you ran braid and not fluro it would ge a great plopper rod as well.

I had a surprise gifting of the 7’4”
I’m not a braided line guy for cranks but I like floro. Makes a lot of sense to me that deep cranking isn’t really a Florida thing but I wish I would have known that years ago. DT10’s are my top off cranks and I’d like to get better at them.

I have been using a 12-18 Antares 5.6 for a couple of years. I REALLY like the reel. Casts far and is crazy smooth under load. No flex noticed, even with 35in pike. I use it on a St Croix 7'11H Legend Glass custom (extended). I use it with braid and it has been my go to crank setup. DT10 dont have a ton of pull but, even with bigger cranks, the reel is super smooth and not stressed at all. I should add that I have a 102mm handle on it (from Shimano Stile).

With a DT10, I can use the above setup or my Daiwa Fle-X-Lite with Alphas SV 7.2.

Where did you get the stile handle? I threw a 6xd all day on my alphas sv 7.2 and was surprised how well it preformed

Thanks! That’s Sunline Defier, IMHO, the best cranking line available.

What line size? Considering the sales are starting I may pick up a trial spool.
Hopefully the weather here returns to normal. This cold 🥶 has got me seeking sheets and a pillow
