Best bang for the buck spinning reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Best bang for the buck spinning reel

Post by lifeofRiley » Mon Feb 03, 2020 4:08 pm

I've been talking to some fellow fishermen about what the best spinning reel is in a midrange price point, maybe 75-120 dollars. A lot of these guys don't maintain their equipment, so longevity/durability are important too.

Most if not all reels are damn good out of the box these days. But more importantly is to pre service the reel out of the box which'll add years to its life. That first few initial uses with factory grease is what decides their fate.

Don't own either, but back in the day the Sahara was hard to beat. I assume it still is. I have a buddy that swears by the Pfleuger Supreme's. He fishes them hard, but takes good care of them. Has some over 7 years old and still butter smooth.

If you are going for max value and not the best refinement, you should check out the chinese brands. One example is Tsurinoya, you can get it through aliexpress. Even their cheapest model is decent and they do not really have a bad modell in the lineup.

They are not as refined as high-end offerings from the traditional brands, they might not be the lightest on the market, but they work and decently designed.

75 - 120 the obvious choices are Fuego LT and Tatula LT. I can't believe no one's mentioned the LT reels yet.

And btw...I strongly recommend against Chinese manufactured spinners. Baitcasters, you might get lucky.

The Daiwa Lt spinners are a great value. Many can allow cheap and easy bearing upgrades on the spool, handle knob, and bail rollers, making them feel like the more expensive reels. I bought my two young boys cheap Daiwa RG's in the 2000 size to drag through the dirt when we are creek hopping for trout. I can't believe how much better they are than the high end reels that I grew up with.

Daiwa Tournament SS series. 700 for UL/L duty, 1300 will handle bass and light inshore duties. It’s been in continuous production unchanged since the late 80’s for a good reason, it does everything a reel needs to do very well, plus the reliability is unmatched. Try and kill it, I dare ya.

Drag on my 1300 stutters. Sent it to a professional. Still stutters. :( Guess a trip to Ian is now in order. Will have more in cleaning fees and shipping than the original cost of the reel.

That's unusual, but certainly possible
