SLP Works Zaion Screwless

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

SLP Works Zaion Screwless

Post by breamtim » Sat Feb 15, 2020 10:06 pm

Hi Guys

Can anyone tell me if the SLP works Zaion Screwless drag stars fit the TD-Z range? Looking to fit a red one to my TD-Ito but can't find online if it will fit.

Thanks, Tim

Seems it doesn't fit on a TD-Z (or old Steez, Zillion and red Fuego).
Here you can find a compatibility list for all SLP parts

Not sure about the Td-Z but it 100% fits and functions perfectly on an OG Zillion and SV103. I've had/have it on both.

No, the drive shaft is too short to allow the square nut and spring under the star.

Have you tried this Tim?

I just did out of curiously. There's minimal threads available for a nut to grab. A screw in JDM style nut would allow it to work though.

Yes, the thicker brass nut from the Tatula is a definite no-go. The thinner aluminum nut from a Steez SV TW allows the star to be installed, but there is virtually no drag adjustment and the drag is almost at full lockdown.

Are there any other older reels with this similar, short drive shaft? I figured the new spring and nut stars would work on any Daiwa reel, assuming you have the spring and nut of course.

Same non-fitment on the OG Steez, as well. It's the same problem with the og pixy vs the px-r. The drive shaft is longer on the pxr, to accommodate the clicking mechanism and star. Btw, I alao tried it on an old TD-S, and it worked ok with the thinner aluminum Steez square nut, though the drag wouldn't back off fully. I made it work successfully on a TD Advantage 150.

Bumping this back up to the top to confirm whether or not the screwless design can be retrofitted to the Z2020? I’m trying to dress mine up a little and like the screwless ones available more than the traditional.

I havent done that exact swap, so I cant say for sure, but the SS SV and Alphas SV 105 are the only reels I've seen that you can do that to, due to the absurdly long crank shafts. Even on those 2, you still cant quite get the drag to back off fully.
Btw, you have to have the thinner nut from a Steez CT to make those 2 reels (sort of) work.
