Daiwa Alphas Air TW 2020

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Might it be around regular Alphas sized frame, modified to TWS & smaller spool? TWS takes more room, but I think this spool is narrower and that creates some of room for TWS, because line guide travel is decreased.

Nice (in my opinion) that it seems not actually real spacers, there is some kind of flange but it's rigid in frame / sideplate.

Bad that this is expensive Alphas...
Agreed expensive alphas. I only paid $80-$100 more for each of my steez airs online.
The 396ish USD is the MSRP, street price will be lower I am sure.
Most definitely. Still the most expensive msrp I’ve seen on an alphas, and street price on the Steez air is much better than msrp. I hope the same trend follows with this reel too. I’d love to try one. Like everyone else is saying wish it had a non bfs option.

Can you share the link to Alphas Air Tw on digitaka? I can't seem to find it.

This is really interesting reel!

But is it made with spacers?

Frame is a little bit bigger than Steez Air, but that is OK I think.

Is line guide further from spool in Alphas vs. Steez? Or is it just in casting position?
Going off pictures and videos doesn’t look like it has spacers. I really hope it has the outgoing audible drag.

I hope so to. I had a guy comment after I was wishful about the Alphas AIR TW having a clicking drag looking geatset in the exploded drag pic of the UTD. He said that the Steez AIR also had the same pic...no fun clicking drag on that puppy.

Gear size increased...I was REALLY hoping those 8.6 gears would fit into an Alphas SV. Gears will be duraluminum too. Seems like blasphemy for an Alphas to not have brass gears but, I actually like Daiwa aluminum gears. I would say my SS AIR that I have had for years is one of the smoothest reels I have used. Steez CT too.

I will still attempt to put those 8.6 gears from the AIR TW into my Alphas SV. Never know unless you try right?

Might be (including tax and customs) maybe 421 € in Finland ...Uhh. But I think I must buy. And probably also ridiculously high priced KTF spool (including shipping and tax and customs).

Could you clarify a little please? Do you mean higher gear ratio or physically bigger gears overall?

Both. The gears are physically bigger and, the ratio is higher. 8.6 ratio. I only saw the main gear size. It is about 5.5mm larger than previous Alphas.

Wow that seems like a substantial difference right? Should help with cranking power, especially with that higher gear ratio. This reel seems like it could be a power finesse machine with a little more line capacity. Still wish those gears were brass though...

I have an extra set of more than pe 8.6 bronze gears I got to try in my steez A. It would be interesting if these fit the new alphas.

That is interesting. I'd love to hear about it if you get a chance at some point. I recently picked up a Morethan PE and it's the smoothest reel I've ever felt.

I think this Alphas Air 2020 shares same spool as Steez Air and that spool is finesse-finesse, not power finesse. And if so, line capacity is 40 m / 0,10 mm. I don't know what pound rating it corresponds to, but by taking Stroft GTM 0,10 mm strength, which is 1,4 kg, which is approx 3 lb and 40 m is approx 37 yards. Anyway line capacity is low and spool is light and diameter is small.

Gears might be strong built with regardless of aluminium.

Exactly. Only power finesse if it had a larger line capacity. Maybe just a spool swap once we know the size and what fits. Likely won't see a standard Alphas TW until at least next year I would imagine.

Yes, but this is new small spool and currently only one swap possibility, KTF, which obviously is slightly lighter and I think it has similar capacity than original.

In my opinion current ct Alphas is pretty perfect power finesse reel :) And with KTF spool it's good finesse reel :) But still I'm thinking I must buy that Alphas Air. :)
