Daiwa Alphas Air TW 2020

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Not exposed threads. I was referring to the knurling of the plastic hood lockdown nut. I dont like rods with exposed reel seat threads.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

I fished a friends one lately and am quite disappointed with how it palms - rod tip down I place my index finger on the chin piece - wasn’t comfortable, just like the Tatula CT / zillion sv tw frame. His Steez CT was super comfy tho. Daiwa knows how to upsell 🙄
So it plams worse than a normal Alphas. Thanks T-wing.
I dont think so. The Alphas AIR TW still palms smaller. The reel feels more narrow than the OG frame.
I just saw a guy say that wrapping your finger around the nose plate of the reel wasn't comfortable. This is a common problem with Twing reels and this was not an issue with the Alphas. Smaller dosen't mean better palming automatically. If it strangely shaped (many Twing reels are) then the reel can palm poorly and especially so when attempting to wrap your finger around the front of the reel. With width of the Twing reels often make this uncomfortable. I have to change how I hold my older Tatulas because of it. The new 100 seems OK although it is not great. Just OK.
I also wrap my finger around the nose plate of the reel. Everyone is different with comfort. With the Alphas AIR TW...I really like it's frame

Got the reel yesterday. Went for some trout fishing with 6lb invizx and a kuying Teton 662l (2-10g).
I mostly fished upstream with 2.7 to 4.5 gram spoons and spinners, which gave dozens of small trout. Also used an Illex/Jackall Tricoroll 56MD-f downstream briefly to capture a larger sea-run trout.

The reel is great. It palms fine for me. With spool tension left at factory settings and brakes at 8-10/20, I got long effortless overhead and sidearm casts. Nowhere near a backlash. Best out-of-the box BFS reel that I have used. I would love for the reel to have a line-out drag noise, but that is about the only gripe that I have.

I miss the drag pulling sound too. There will be kits I imagine to make it click

Finally arrived! Roro Steez Air/ Alphas Air TW spool. Quality is top notch just like all my other roro spools. On all my bfs spools I swap out the bearing to my go to Kyosho R/C car bearings.

Aliexpress. There is a DIY spool thread in the maintenance section of this forum with links.

I will still attempt to put those 8.6 gears from the AIR TW into my Alphas SV. Never know unless you try right?
Did you ever try a gear swap?

How about steez air gear set in alpha air?

It would have been perfect with 6.8:1 on the alpha air...

Do they make a deeper spool option for these yet? Might be interesting as a more all-around use reel. Or would it need more than just a drop-in spool for that?

Hey guys,

would like to know if anyone here had attempted or at least looked into adding a drag clicker on the 20 Alphas Air TW? I've seen a couple of articles and YouTube vids of folks doing it.

Heres a vid[youtube]https://youtu.be/W7fubaPv8zA/youtube]

It looks like most parts can be brought over from the Steez CT SV TW (part # 92 ~ # 96) - except for what appears to be a custom plastic/metal piece machined or 3D printed that looks like attached pic.

If anyone knows any info of anyone that has made or can make that custom piece, please do share!

Cheers :D
