Daiwa Alphas Air TW 2020

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

And this is how 2021 Pixy is borne.
Never know. Even if its called an Alphas...A shallow SV version of the Alphas AIR can still be inthe Pixy family...kinda like that awkward in law

I kinda want it to be made out of magnesium, not aluminium. The added color Pixy's are known for would be another plus. Tired of silver/black reels with red accents, its the most overused thing ever.

Amen. When's the last time Daiwa released a domestic reel with some unconventional colors? The Sol, and then the Viento?

For those that have this reel, I am quite interested in knowing your thoughts on it. Thanks.

Performance (casting distance) is quite similar to 16Aldebaran with avail 16ALD15R spool. However new alphas tw likes light lines better, Casts lightest off lures easier.
Tolerances are better on alphas tw.Overall build quality goes to Aldebaran.
Spool tension knob on alphas tw feels quite vague. It also wasn’t set by factory.
Aftermarket spools options by ktf and Ali makes the new alphas for me overall a great addition to my limited reel arsenal.

I fished a friends one lately and am quite disappointed with how it palms - rod tip down I place my index finger on the chin piece - wasn’t comfortable, just like the Tatula CT / zillion sv tw frame. His Steez CT was super comfy tho. Daiwa knows how to upsell 🙄

So it plams worse than a normal Alphas. Thanks T-wing.

I dont think so. The Alphas AIR TW still palms smaller. The reel feels more narrow than the OG frame.

I just saw a guy say that wrapping your finger around the nose plate of the reel wasn't comfortable. This is a common problem with Twing reels and this was not an issue with the Alphas. Smaller dosen't mean better palming automatically. If it strangely shaped (many Twing reels are) then the reel can palm poorly and especially so when attempting to wrap your finger around the front of the reel. With width of the Twing reels often make this uncomfortable. I have to change how I hold my older Tatulas because of it. The new 100 seems OK although it is not great. Just OK.

I put my index finger under the threads of the hood, so that would be a non-issue for me.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Here's a better Alphas Air. Get yourself any of the standard Alphas, a ray's studio/momo/amo bfs spool, and you have a great reel that is less expensive, made in Japan, has access to deep and shallow spools and palms well. You can even cerakote it in whatever color, especially if the only you purchased was cheap with chipping and scratches. At least that is what i would do.

This is how I used to palm and started training myself to return to due the the wide front of TWS reels. Exposed hood threads though. Yikes. Which rods have that these days?
