How Do I Remove A Retainer Ring?
How Do I Remove A Retainer Ring?
I’ve been servicing my reels for a while, but I’m ashamed to say I’ve never removed a retainer ring like this one! What’s my best approach to popping that off? Just pushing against it hasn’t worked, and I’m worried about bending it out. Have I just not used enough force yet?

It's quite easy using an eyebrow tweezer
You have to push the C and at the same time push down your thumb, so you don't lose contact with the clip

Yeah, tweezers or two small flat head screwdrivers. Don't worry too much about opening the clip up, you can close it with a pair of needle nose. Just don't let it fly off into the abyss!!

If your a newbie doing it for the first or just clumsy and for the 4500th time, do it into a large plastic bag where you can easily catch it.
Avoid the abyssal ground search.

I use hemostat clamps. They work good for knocking them off. And they work good to hold them in place when you put them back on.

My ring totally popped off and flew on the carpet, btw. Even after I was prepared for that possibility and was trying to avoid it. So yeah... be careful.
Found it on the carpet and everything is good. This was a new reel that I'd gotten off eBay, and it had a little too much give between the level wind gear and the plate anchoring it to the frame, so the gear shaft (and attached handle, star drag etc.) kept sliding up and down by the tiniest amount when reeling. Not a big deal, except that it was driving me crazy Filed down a washer to the right height, added it in-between, put the retainer ring back on and now everything feels rock solid.
Gotta stay busy during lockdown!

Inside a ziplock if possible helps losing the clip.
