Most forgiving baitcaster

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Most forgiving baitcaster

Post by zodiak311 » Mon Apr 27, 2020 11:36 am

Never really considered this, but which bait caster is easiest to cast for a 6 year old? I have a bunch of lighter fast spools in my line up.

So far he has been doing decent with my SV103, but I kind of want that reel back.
Any good suggestions of a decent price? I might have one in my drawer, but just wanted to get some opinions. Thanks!!!

The new 2020 Tatula SV TW 103 is definitely forgiving, and it's compact and pretty light.

Any Shimano DC reel will be the most forgiving (kinda by definition because it's really hard to backlash).

I wouldn't necessarily say "most" forgiving, but I'd recommend one of the Abu or Lews with dual braking. That way he can still learn to use a baitcaster and grow into by backing off the brakes as he gets more proficient. SV and DC are awesome (own several of each) but they kind of take the work out of it. Might be very frustrating if he ever wants to try a more advanced baitcaster as he gets older.

I would disagree, I think learning a proper casting stoke is vastly more important then learning the in's and out's of a given braking system. Once you know how to cast well, most any reel with any braking system is usable with a very short period of adjustments, so starting with a reel that is the most tame and least fussy would be best.

I wasn't talking about learning a braking system. He needs to learn to use a thumb. SV and DC reels don't really require that, unless you turn the brakes off.

You can still train your thumb with them by always slowing and stopping your casts instead of just letting them run out of steam. A smooth casting stoke that insures the rod is fully loaded reduces the need for a lot of thumb in general and being able to build skill in that without having to think about the reel is going to be way easier and less frustrating then trying to learn thumb control and casting skill at the same time.

Now you guys have me wondering about the rod as well with all this talk about casting etc...
That's so Tackletour.
Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I guess the size of the reel matters as well, especially for his hands. He likes the SV103 a lot, but it is a little taller reel on a rod.

Which means the OP gets to shop for a new reel for himself, that's the perfect solution lol
