Braid causing gear wear?
Braid causing gear wear?
My go to lure is always a bladed jig. I use them about 80% of the time. I sometimes have 4 rods rigged with bladed jigs. I Always fish them using braided line. Most of my other rods are rigged with braid also. It seems to me though that most of my reels become rough during the retrieve after just a few trips. All of my reels have brass gears. Even my Bantam MGL has become geary after about 5 or 6 trips. I am convinced that the braid along with the resistance of the bladed jig is causing my reels to wear out prematurely. The reels that have stayed the smoothest for me are my OG Zillions. What do you guys think?
Re: Braid causing gear wear?
I do not see how braid would have an effect on gears, but I might be ignorant. Unless, it is causing more resistance. What gear ratio are you using?
Btw I hate fishing bladed jigs cuz I feel like it makes my gear and my bones rattle lol. Unfortunetely last 3 out of 3 orders from JLS they threw in jackhammer gift...

Quick comparison between the years and the gear types.

Re: Braid causing gear wear?
Most of my bladed jig reels are 6.2:1. Normally lower gear ratios are smoother. Maybe the wear is from all the fish I catch.rando wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 4:20 pmI do not see how braid would have an effect on gears, but I might be ignorant. Unless it is causing more resistance. I am ignorant, I don't see it either. The pull on retrieve is the same with any line, unless you're pulling up logs.rando wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 4:20 pmI do not see how braid would have an effect on gears, but I might be ignorant. Re: Braid causing gear wear?
The OG TD Zillion family of reels is the most durable baitcasting reel series ever made in my opinion. I just don't think that the new micromesh style gears, whatever brand, hold a candle when it comes to durability. All of the complaints about newer Shimano gears on here should give consumers a clue as to what expect in terms of durability. I don't know how Shimano keeps up with the replacements.

Re: Braid causing gear wear?
I'm not looking for posts about MM gears being replaced but that's screen shots from just this year alone from one guy mainly...
I just want HEG gears back... So badly...

Re: Braid causing gear wear?
This is interesting! Being a Salmon fishing guy none of my Micro Module gears have held up well... I use light line as well nothing over 10lb test and I notice after sticking a hot fish that makes several hard runs or several in a row that smooth reel I started with has left the building... I have replaced more shimano gears in the last three to fours years than I have my entire 40 years on the water. I feel like I have to baby my Metaniums with nothing more than 8lb test or i'm buying new gears the next day. I wonder how the inshore guys are doing with them? I also wonder if there is way to harden or temper the gears to make them more durable? I have tried several very expensive brands of reels grease and I end up servicing my reels after each long day on the water trying to help them last.

Re: Braid causing gear wear?
Well Daiwa has their own MM gears but haven't heard anything yet, a friend has 2 Ryoga's with them and no issues yet? And I mean targets big Murray Cod over a meter on huge surface baits.
Re: Braid causing gear wear?
This is why all my new high speed reels with be 7:1. That's plenty fast for me.
